My Goodness, it’s SuperBru time again!

I love Fridays. It means it’s Super 14 rugby time again and this is when we get to predict the game’s’ winners and by what points deficit. So far I am doing really well. I am currently sitting in #1 position with a good few points between me and #2. However, it’s only round 4 and there are many many rounds to go.

 super_14_logo superbru_logo

This morning started off with a nail biting finish. I was only 1 point out in the first game until seconds before the final whistle when the Chiefs came in and scored under the posts. Chiefs 31 – 13 Force. Rats. That unfortunately blew my points difference out of the water. The second game was also pretty much down to the wire and at the final whistle the points difference was 4 and I predicted 5 so I get big points for that game. Waratahs 15 – 11 Reds. That’s it for today though.

Tomorrow the 1st game Hurricanes vs Cheetahs is at 3:30am local and I can assure everyone I will be FAST asleep for that. My team, the Sharks, Blues vs Sharks, kick off at 6:30am and I can assure everyone I will be GLUED to the screen! COME ON SHARKS!!! I have friends coming around for breakfast, coffee, beer, lunch, rugby (in no particular order) the entire day. Tomorrow is also a big Rugby IRB 7’s day in Dubai with South Africa hoping to gram another World Cup trophy! Come on BOKKE!!

Valentines Day Poker Rally

This weekend past saw a great flying event known as the Poker Rally. Being Valentines Day I wanted to call it the “Poke Her Rally” but I didn’t get much support from the committee.

The Poker Rally is a general aviation flying event following loosely the general rules of the famous card game, Poker. Four away landings are planned and a card is issued to each participant (pilot or passenger). The 5th and final card is issued on the final landing back at base. Best hand wins.

Poker Rally 00

It went off tremendously! A better turn out than expected based on the weather. Two planes never arrived for fear of rain. Admittedly, we had to make some quick changes and reroutes half way through in order to avoid the low cloud and rain. Still we managed and it was all together a very successful day with a good braai (BBQ) after the last plane was safely hangered. Many thanks to PP who helped me organise the entire shebang!

Happy Valentine’s Day

To all you lovers out there, and to all those out there who want to be lovers, happy valentine’s day for you all tomorrow. Although it is so sickly commercial these days along with Christmas and Easter, it is still a nice way to show a loved one (or just one that you fancy) that you care. Go spoil the other half tomorrow.

Happy_Valentine__s_Day_by_mjranum

Guys : Go get your girl a sexy set of delicate underwear. Trust me, it will work in your favour and be for your benefit too!
Girls : Go buy yourself a sexy set of underwear and show your man later. Trust me, it will be for your benefit too!

Hang on a sec, I should be selling sexy sets of underwear. Just take my word for it, it works! Maybe not the sneaky sneaky secret valentine cos that could just be creepy and she would want to know how you got her bra and knickers size. For the newbie’s, stick to chocolates and flowers! You can get her bra and knickers size the next morning from off your bedroom floor if all goes well.

All the best you people. Have an awesome day/night/weekend/new life!

Kitesurfing

A small move on from yesterday’s bit on Freebording, here is yet another another crazy sport that has hit South Africa by storm, Kitesurfing or Kiteboarding. Wiki, as always, has a great write-up on the sport. This is also like a merging of concepts between wakeboarding (whereby you get towed behind a boat), surfing, and power kiting (where people used to stack power kites and throw themselves into the air).

Kitesurfing 00

Kitesurfing is no new concept and I remember seeing them in Hawaii back in 2001, but the sport has subsequently grown and has become a hell of a lot safer over the years. Equipment has improved as has safety aspects on lines and power and depower “zones” to make for an incredible ride but not one where you are going to kill yourself. I tried it once a couple of years ago, let my concentration slip for a second and I was yanked 15 meters (40 ft) into the air and dumped on the beach almost resulting in me requiring a knee operation. Don’t be stupid. Get lessons!

Kitesurfing 02

This is what I am doing now. Getting lessons. When I tried it in the past my mate Mullac and I bought a kite together to learn, and I subsequently moved away to another project. He continued learning and practicing and now I have some catching up to do. Timing isn’t great though and getting the right conditions can be tricky. Although PE always has wind, it has to be the right kind of wind. Not too soft and not too strong and must be blowing across the beach in specific directions. Anything else can result in severe bodily harm or getting blown out to sea. Not good! Also my instructor is only available after 5pm as he has a real job too. Poor bastard! We have managed to squeeze in a couple of hours but I am still nervous after my last ordeal. As soon as I can get over that I am going to love it. The last lesson resulted in the kite exploding. No idea why, it just happened while sitting on the beach. I swear!. So now its getting repaired. Again.

This weekend’s shenanigans

This weekend promises to be a good one. So far this week the weather has been miserable (for some, as I don’t really mind strong winds and rain), so not a lot has been going on. Indoor activities on bad weather days are better left unspoken.

I can’t recall if I mentioned before or not but I am taking kite surfing lessons these days. I tried it on my own some years ago and almost ended up in hospital having a knee operation. Be careful! I planned to go for my kite surfing lesson on Wednesday but the wind was blowing so strong I reckon a layer of paint got sandblasted from my car so it was decided, unless I wanted to visit Madagascar on my first attempt, it was probably not a wise idea. I had to agree with my life!

Today is a beautiful day. Sun is shining, wind has calmed and all spirits are high for the weekend.

Tonight is J9’s birthday bash. Happy happy girl. She has booked a party bus which does a pub crawl to her stipulated venues of choice. I know these venues. I know it’s going to be a joll (Party!). The bus stops early but PE is small so a taxi fare from the last venue home is nothing compared to the pain and heartache of having to leave this fiasco early! The theme is Carnival, think Rio. My mind hurts. Here is a brief communication between me and the birthday girl (J9):

carnival bum

Hoox: Theme Rio Carnival? All very well and good for the girls and of course for all the guys looking at all the girls but what the hell do guys wear? I can assure you now, no one in PE is going to be even remotely impressed if I show up oiled to the max wearing nothing but a g-string and nipple caps with tassels. London, yeah. New York, kewl. Rio, abso-freakin-lutely. PE … ummm … I think not!!

J9: I just wanted to keep living the Rio dream for a wee while longer, but as you mentioned I don’t quite think the theme is going to take off. In fact I don’t think people really tend to read the fine print, so most likely you would be the only sad soul (and moj) that turns up dressed up to the max. G-strings and nipple caps with tassels may just scare off the more conservative amongst us. Best to keep it clean (well for the first few minutes anyway). Have a sneaking suspicion that tonight is going to be raucous and quite out of hand… gotta love it:-)
Sooooo… do wear whatever takes your fancy. Pretty open minded, so if G-strings are your thing you’re welcome bebe. I am sure you’ll give them a show;-)

As much as I would like to think I am brave enough to pull this off, I am going to chicken out. This is a VERY small town. The only time the Sleepy Hollow wakes up is when there is scandal and gossip. I’m new in town and have to make a good impression! 8)

Anyhow, LNELL and I are leaving the party early. This is because we are responsible adults and conscientious when it comes to obeying the stipulated rules and regulations of aviation regarding alcohol consumption and timing thereof and more importantly, life preservation! Mostly the latter but it looks good to throw in the other crap as well. This weekend we are flying to Gatiep (Gariep Dam) which is about 2-3 hours away and camping overnight. Barefoot Airways ZS-FUP is on the move again. This time a scheduled layover is planned and possibly a second stop on the [family’s] farm on the way back. Might come back Sunday, maybe Monday, even Tuesday if we decide to go somewhere else too! Not as regular a routine schedule as our other competing airlines (SAA, 1-Time, BA, Kulula) but we certainly have a hell of a lot more fun!

So, without further ado, I hereby wish you all a very very happy weekend and see you when I see you. Maybe Wednesday! Hahahaha

To infinity and beyond ~ My hero, Buzz Lightyear!

International football – Sleepy Hollow style

And here we are. An international match. Russia’s Moscow FC vs South Africa’s Jomo Cosmos. It’s 10 minutes in and it’s 0-0 but you can see from the crowd that is now 25 strong, this game is riviting! Reporting to you live from the stadium.

Oh crap. Look I can’t keep this up. Its pants! I think we are going to blow this popcorn stand and join the rest of the world watching Obama’s inauguration.

Barefoot Airways : ZS-FUP

January 17. A spectacular day out flying.

Plan of action: Take off from Port Elizabeth, fly to Willowmore, fly to Outshoorn, fly to Mossel Bay, fly to George and return to Port Elizabeth. As per usual with the new starter airline, Barefoot Airways, it doesn’t usually end up as planned. But that’s the beauty of it. Just go with the flow and enjoy the views from the front row.

Barefoot Airways consists of two pilots, namely Hoox (myself) and LNELL. Passengers are of course welcome and for this trip the lucky soul was a great girl, J9, who I cornered into saying yes just the night before at a party while she was hallucinating from the effects of a large dose of penicillin and other potential narcotics (all prescribed I have been assured). I gave her the call at 7:30 waking her up and telling her she had to be at the airport by 8:00. Very cruel I know but would you believe it, she made it on time. She can show you girls a thing or two about getting ready in under 2 hours! All that was left now was pre-flight inspections of the aircraft and passenger briefing.

Barefoot Airways

The passenger briefing was short and sweet. “Rule 1 : No shoes!. Rule 2 : Don’t talk while we are talking to Air Traffic Control (ATC). Rule 3 : Take loads of photos and have fun! This is a list of our expected destinations however this can change en-route. Right lets go.” Like I said, pax briefing is short with Barefoot Airways.

Pictures speak a million words so I am going to shut up now. Most of these photos were taken by our ultra keen pax, J9. She also makes a great photographer. Go girl! Thanks.

3G iPhone Unlocked!

It’s been a long time waiting but I can confirm now that my 3G iPhone is now unlocked on the South African Vodacom network. Its simply sweeeeeeet!

Basic requirements: (see how to below)

iPhone firmware MUST be upgraded to version 2.2
iPhone MUST be jailbreaked with Quickpwn
You MUST install Yellowsn0w

unlock1

Obviously I can take absolutely no (SFA) credit for this. It is all down to the marvellously clever and ever perseverant chaps at Dev Team and Yellowsn0w! Combined they have come up with the all new Quickpwn to jailbreak the phone and then through the new Cydia package you can download the Yellosn0w app which unlocks the iPhone. Here is Dev Teams blog where you can catch up on all the latest and greatest updates in the fight against the Apple Capitalist Whores (I mean that in the nicest possible way of course!)

This has been out for a couple of weeks now but with all things technical I don’t usually like being the first kid on the block to try it as there are always teething problems. And thank goodness for that since there were a few issues as reported in many forums, but this is known as beta testing! Most of the expected (and unexpected) issues have since been taken care of and it seems pretty stable to me. Actually its quite incredible. So simple!

Here’s a step by step: Check * comments below first for hints and tips! Use at own risk. I hold no responsibility whatsoever. I have merely listed what I had to do. There are better forums and instructions you can find with simple searching on Google and the relevant Yellowsn0w and Dev Team websites!

  • BACK UP YOUR IPHONE! *
  • Connect iPhone 3G to iTunes
  • Download and install update to 2.2 (essential) **
  • Download the latest Quickpwn
  • Restart your PC
  • With the iPhone still connected (do not open iTunes) run Quickpwn
  • Follow all Quickpwn prompts on your iPhone. Be alert! There are quick user actions required. Know what your Home button it. Know what your power button is! ***
  • iPhone will restart. Close Quickpwn
  • Open your WiFi connection and connect to a WiFi network (I used Mugg & Bean) ****
  • Open Cydia on your iPhone (you will now see the icon on the desktop)
  • Run the necessary updates as prompted
  • Click Manage – Click Sources – Click Edit – Click Add
  • Type in http://apt9.yellowsn0w.com *****
  • Click Add Source
  • It will automatically update all source repositories
  • Click Search – Type in Yellowsn0w
  • Click on search result Yellowsn0w and install it
  • Restart your iPhone3G
  • HEY PRESTO, welcome to your unlocked iPhone on any network

* In iTunes, right click on your device and select Backup! This can take a while. This is just in case the shit hits the fan and you have to restore the thing. Be aware this backup does not cover everything. It will back up your Contacts, Notes, Camera Roll (not synced photos), SMS’s and some App Store applications. It does NOT backup your music or videos or much else for that matter. If the proverbial does hit then reconnect and restore. This will also take some time!

** You can do this in one step in iTunes and just allow iTunes to connect, download and install. Mine however failed a couple of times. It is a 248MB download and since I am on cellular 3G on my laptop this wasted my cap limit instantly basically costing me a small fortune. I now prefer to download the update file independently and once I know its there and good then open iTunes, cancel the prompt to auto update, hold down shift key and click update. It will open an explorer type browse window and prompt you for a file location for the .IPSW file you just downloaded. It will self extract and run. Just let it do it’s thing. FIND THE IPSW FILES HERE!!!! <— CLICK! This will take you to a page that lists all the direct download links for the iPhone firmware files to upgrade to version 2.2

*** If you manually downloaded the 2.2 update file, then when prompted in Quickpwn for your update file (.IPSW) simply browse to the location you saved it. Let it run and do it’s thing. Your Home button is the round (only) button on the face of the iPhone. The Power button is the small long thin silver button on the top right of your iPhone. This may seem trivial to you you but you are suddenly prompted to push and hold these in different orders and different timings. Get this wrong like I did and you may end up having to unnecessarily restore your iPhone to factory default and then run a restore from backup! Painful.

**** I wasted a lot of time thinking how stupid this was. If I couldn’t connect to the mobile carrier then how the hell could I get into the 3G network and how the hell could I download Yellowsn0w with Cydia?? I completely forgot about the WiFi connection because I hardly ever use it here. WiFi is the ONLY way you can do this!

***** Yellowsn0w is spelt with a 0 (zero) in sn0w

Have fun. There’s not a lot more info I can offer. If you have any technical issues then please use our good mate Google to find all the forums for any known solutions. You will be warned countless times that this software is still in it’s beta testing phase so therefore cannot be expected to be 100% foolproof. Saying that though, I am having no problems AT ALL! 8)

GREAT JOB Dev Team and Yellowsn0w!!!

Great Weekend

A lot was achieved this weekend. Some great fun, great drinks, great food with great people. Port Elizabeth is simply the best!

Friday night we went to the German Club Oktoberfest in Lorraine. A very good umpa lumpa band on stage and some waitresses running around in lederhosen. German music and German feasts were in abundance. Only downfall was the beer. All they served was Castle Lager which is a great beer but unfortunately still very South African and did not fit in that well at a German party! The USN diet had to take a side step this weekend. After good fun in the main tent the girls wanted to go around to a smaller dance bar which of course we did to oblige them since we are such gentlemen! The dipshit “DJ”, and I use the term “DJ” very loosely, was a complete knob! All he was doing was playing MP3s off a laptop and half snogging his girlfriend that looked like a boyfriend on stage. He swung from techno-house oooms oooms music to Hey Jude. We swung right out the door and went home. Just as well cos Mullac and I had gym at 6am.

Oct Beer Fest

Saturday morning 5:30am and I was up and ready for gym. I would be a liar if I said I wasn’t feeling slightly jaded from the previous nights festivities. Thanks to Mullac and knowing that he would be waiting for me, I got in the car and went to collect him instead of climbing back into bed. 5:50am we got to the gym only to discover it was closed. Again I would be a liar if I said that I wasn’t really happy about this! I was kinda hoping that they had a complete nuclear meltdown inside and it was closed until further notice. On closer inspection it seems the opening hours on the weekend are just a little later. We had to come back at 7am! Bleak!

Later on in the day we went to the PE Airshow. It was pretty good but not as fantastic as before as it turned out the airforce let us down and didn’t send any of their high speed fighter jets and other military aircraft to perform. Seems this wonderful government has totally harpooned any budget that was previously set aside for anything other than defending that wanker Zuma and his other cronies in defence hearings. Oh and street renaming campaigns. God bless the ANC! So we saw what we could and bailed. Mental note to self, don’t get a number 2 shave haircut and then stand in the sun watching an airshow. OW!

PE Airshow 03PE Airshow 04

PE Airshow 05PE Airshow 06

The big event of the day: Sharks killing the Blue Bulls! Come on Bulls supporters, what was the final score? Oh yes 14-9 to the SHARKS! GO BABY! 2 tries to 0. And you Bulls can stop your bleating about how bad our kicking was. We agree it was complete shite but just imagine if it wasn’t, the score would have been closer to 30-9 so shut your gobs! Only kidding. The Bulls supporters we know were pretty good about the loss and took it like men, even though half of them were women! 8)

Sharks vs Bulls

At T-Bone’s house where we watched the ruggers was also the same venue that was now transformed into T-Bone’s and Merri’s engagement party! Congrats again guys! We needed no more excuse to remain civil and so things got out of hand quite rapidly. The girls in the kitchen were partying up a storm. Armed with a case of vodka and gin, a high speed industrial sized (exaggeration) blender and 2 massive bags of ice, and they were in their element. The kitchen turned into a Cocktails and Dreams as they smashed their way through the booze. God I have no idea how they managed to drink that much and remain sober (looking). I guess it was a relative thing cos the guys outside did a great job of smashing down shooters and solving the world’s problems while in charge of burning the meat.

Sunday I had no voice. Presumably owing to a combination of screaming FOR the Sharks, screaming AT the Bulls supporters, standing in the smoke of the fires outside, swimming in vodka and not wearing a jersey in the chilling Port Elizabeth winds that blew through the ‘hood. None the less I was feeling quite strong but still “a little hoarse”.

Little Horse

It was all very proper arriving at the yacht club for lunch and then moseying on down to the Island Bar for sundowners. Only problem was I had no concept of time and it was only 2pm. So much for sundowners. We were not in London in winter so still had many hours to wait for darkness. We all went our separate ways for the late afternoon. I went home and cleaned up a bit to prepare for everyone’s return as we had another braai (bbq) at my house.

When I finally hit the pillow last night I required no convincing or sheep counting. I slipped into a mild comfortable coma until that bloody alarm went off again at 5:30 this morning. Damn it’s gym time again!

P.E. – The 10 minute city!

My God time here is flying. It feels like just a few hours ago I went to pick Rethom up from the airport! Gees! And now it’s Saturday!

The past few days have been absolutely crazy what with running around and getting stuff sorted out for my new house. Shopping and fixing and sorting and more shopping and looking and sizing etc etc. I think I am about half way through now!

Did I mention before how much I love this city? Well I do! It is absolutely incredible. The people are amazing, service in every restaurant or takeaway I have been in so far has been nothing short of impeccable (with a polite smile), there is VERY little traffic and everything is 10 minutes or less away no matter where in town it is! Except for rush hour cos then its 13 minutes, but rush hour only lasts 25 minutes!

If I must find a complaint then it would have to be about how fast people get from one place to another. Although it is really handy and such a difference from the shit traffic one has to put up with in Johannesburg, the only downside to not spending a lot of time in my car is that I don’t get enough time to charge my phone anymore! 8) And if that is to be my biggest problem here, I ain’t ever leaving! I have been here a week and done a LOT of driving back and forth across town. I have only used half a tank of petrol so far!

It’s a much healthier lifestyle here too. People don’t just hang around in bars even though I beg them to! I have been going to the gym, played some tennis, had a braai with mates and been able to achieve a lot of housey housey stuff and I have only been here 1 week! If this is even half of what I have to look forward to then great, Hoox is a happy man!

If you don’t believe what I say about this place, come and see it for yourself. It’s kewl. Very kewl! And because it’s a beachy / university town, you very rarely need shoes and long trousers to go anywhere! My kind of vibe!

So if I don’t write as often as I used to, please just understand that it’s quite likely I’m outside flying or paragliding, or playing tennis, or at the gym, or learning to kite board, or learning to surf, or playing the guitar, or out photographing kewl stuff. I have watched TV once here and that was for about 20 minutes. There are much better things to be doing!

This is the new life. This is the new Hoox!
