Unexpected London

The beauty of the little red book, being the British Passport, is that it means very little consideration has to be given to travels plans including routing and destination. Most importantly, NO VISAS!

My original plan was to fly from Johannesburg to Tirana via an Istanbul layover. Admittedly this was purely out of habit as this is the way I have travelled before. And that’s they way Puccino travelled before. Something clicked in my head the day I was buying the ticket, which happened to be a few days before flying, and I checked other airlines and other routes. Well blow me down and feed me biscuits! I was expecting to pay roughly $1400 on Turkish Airlines which included a crappy layover in Istanbul. I was pleasantly shocked to see Virgin Atlantic with a direct flight to London at $590. Way less than half the price! London, here I come! With the British passport, the gates just open! Hello world!

virgin

I was an idiot! I thought that it would be really kewl to try and slum it into town along with the other young travelling backpackers on the trains and tubes etc. Perhaps in a way trying to regain my youth if not for more than just a fleeting moment. I repeat, I was an idiot! What a stupid idea! Heavy bags, rush hour on the trains, delays, tickets which ended up costing me more than I bargained for and the fact that I actually hadn’t slept properly for about a week trying to sort my life out. It ended up costing me about 20 quid and 4 hours of my life let alone the pain in my back, neck and shoulders from lugging my crap up and down a million stairs. When I asked a mini cab how much a Heathrow pickup was he said about 35 quid. For the sake of 3 or 4 pints! Arrgghhhh! NEXT TIME!!!

Earlsfield

It was fabulous to see all the old faces. Well not old but you know what I mean. Happy Bean and Katz, Knackers and Puddle Duck, Mildew, Fairlane and J9, Stu and Hawks, Syko and of course Shazza who was kind enough to offer me a bed for 2 nights. It was awesome to be back. I say that tentatively cos I have always felt that London is a great place to visit. I stand firm in the belief that the warm and fuzzy feeling would wear off quite soon and it would be a drag to live in again!

I got some shopping done. Some drinking. Some more drinking. A little more shopping. And mostly more drinking. It was a very necessary trip career wise as well as I managed the opportunity to catch up with an old boss and discuss future possibilities! Always a good beer when money is discussed.

I knew it was going to be a fleeting trip and that is exactly what it was. I achieved a hell of a lot in 2 days and then it was time to go.

Thanks everyone for such a good time!

Soldiers striking?

In what world is the backbone of any country’s defence allowed to strike? Oh, in this world it seems. In the crazy world of South Africa. Here we have our military in illegal protest that turned into a riot. Fantastic. What is happening to this country? It seems everyone can have a strike. Doctors, Metro Police, World Cup construction workers etc etc and now the military. The useless bastards of today’s military have demands of a 30% pay increase and suddenly it turns into a petrol bomb and rubber bullet party after destroying government property. What do they even do for their salaries?

“Defying a court order, engaging in unnecessary violent behaviour, causing damage to private and public property and attempting to invade the seat of government is totally unacceptable,” said government spokesperson Themba Maseko”

Military

“Several soldiers and a policeman were injured, reported SAPA. Some police and military vehicles were also damaged by a petrol bomb.”

“"While acknowledging that that soldiers’ march was illegal, Cosatu nevertheless believes that the reaction by the police – with stun grenades and rubber bullets – was reckless and excessive," said spokesman Patrick Craven, reported SAPA”

In many countries, action like attempting to invade the seat of government is usually considered an uprising or coup and likely to to be declared mutiny or treason and punishable by death. Our police just get reprimanded for excessive force

Just to add salt to the wound, you get some prick Shaheed Mahomed of the Workers International Vanguard League saying ridiculous statements like “Soldiers should have the full right to protest as well as the right to strike”. But then again, this brain box also feels that “We fully support the right of soldiers to elect their leaders in the army and that their leaders should be subject to instant recall.” Soldiers electing the generals? This isn’t the fucking boy scouts! Oh hang on, perhaps it is!

One step closer to the Banana Republic! Whatever!

And now we have a cat!

I don’t really know what’s going on but one thing I can assure you is that I don’t have a sign that says Dr Doolittle outside on my front gate. Can people please advise the neighbourhood animals of this.

A few days ago, early Tuesday I think it was, a cat roamed in off the street and promptly made itself comfortable in my house. It’s a gorgeous cat so I guess I didn’t have the heart to kick it up the ass and send it packing. I probably should have though since three days later it’s still here. Gorgeous little thing wouldn’t you agree?

Cat00

Only problem now is trying to find it’s rightful owner. I have been to all the local shops and checked out the notice boards. I have even looked at all the vets and vet accessory places for “lost cat” signs but so far I have seen nothing. I am sceptical about putting signs up with a photo cos I’m worried that some arb person, upon seeing this gorgeous animal, calls to claim it when it’s not theirs. Everyone agrees. All the advice I have received so far is telling me that this is quite normal and that it could hang around a few days and then bugger off home. If after that it’s still here, then it has decided to move house and we have a new pet. That isn’t kewl. I mean it really is an amazing animal so as runaways go this is a great one to get but I can’t help but feel heart sore when I think about some poor kid that had just lost it’s beloved cat. Hopefully these people will care enough to start putting signs up or contact the vets dammit! If they don’t care enough to do that then I can start to see why it bailed on them in the first place. Anyway, I will continue the hunt tomorrow.

Wish me luck. Here kitty kitty! Pssst Pssst

Home Juno

We have adopted a dog. Well kinda. Since we are leaving home soon we can’t keep her forever so we are just a foster home until we get a permanent home for her.

She arrived the day before yesterday with the alleged name Lady. YAWN! Who names a dog Lady these days? So we decided we were going to give her a chance at being semi kewl. Puccino came up with her new name: Juno. I asked why so I got a brisk list of answers. Next time I’m just going to say OK! Juno, from the movie, is a sassy underage girl dealing with pregnancy. This dog is a cheeky thing but full of fun and at 1 years old has already had a litter, or so it seems. We also got her in winter and since Juno is a city in the very cold Alaska (ok it’s spelled Juneau), she thought that was also suitable.

So there you have it. Juno she is. Here she is.

 Juno 01 Juno 02

Juno 03

She has a bit of a sad story as much of it as we know that is. She was purchased by a security company to keep the nightshift guards company while on duty. When we got her she was pretty dirty and has one or two small sores on her so I don’t think she was very well looked after. The last straw was she was hit by a car the other day. A mate of mine who works for the company who the security company looks after, found out about the dog and took her away. He took her to the vet and got her taken care of. After a good wash and a bit of TLC she is happier than a….. than a really happy dog!

So now she is here and we are looking for a good home for her.

It’s time. Job time!

Now I would be a complete liar if I had said that my last year of vacation was hated, practically well spent, or would be remembered in a negative light. That would all be complete bollocks. I have had a ball. But let me be serious for just a moment. I think it sums it up quite nicely as a mate of mine, DubDub, put it during an MSN conversation over the weekend, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”

WOW. Let the job hunting crack on then. It is time. Time to rejoin the working class!

Job Hunting

Ok, well it wasn’t a complete wow as the thought of job hunting is nothing new. I have even mentioned it here a few times. Time now just feels right to get back into it. All my commitments at home are complete. I can leave now content that everything here will be fine in my absence. Sure it’s only taken 6 months to get there but what’s the hurry hey?

Now the bigger issue. You see, the kind of jobs I’m looking for don’t just show up on a Google search for “Great International IT Contracts”. Although, it could still be worth a shot. Yup, just as I thought: “No results found for "Great International IT Contracts"” It’s now all about looking up old contacts and hoping they still remember me. Oh well, let’s see.

I am actually really looking forward to it. Ok there’s that dreaded week or so getting back into it. You think it’s tough getting off a 2 week vacation? Try a 52 week vacation. But apart from that I am actually looking forward to the creating, the planning, the fixing and all the challenges that IT setups bring with them in order to feel that incredible feeling of success when the project manager takes you aside and says, “Damn great job Hoox. Here’s your raise and promotion”. Ok so that doesn’t happen but I still feel all warm and fuzzy inside when it goes right even if it is a quiet celebration.

Right. Time to crack on.

South African Winter

We are now into the first week of August which is obviously still slap bang in the middle of the South African winter. And how we are suffering. Check out the week ahead’s forecast. Oh woe is us! It’s braai (bbq) and sunshine weekend all round!

Just a pity about Tuesday and Wednesday when it turns into a “miserable” partly cloudy and 21 Deg and 18 Deg respectively.

Hey hey hey. What’s up?

Time to hit the play button again. Pause has been on long enough. Now I will just have to see how often I can get online with some part time waffle.

So when last did you make the news? This week I became infamous with an unfortunate aviation “situation” which made myself and an unnamed accomplice the feature of headline news around the area. That’s what will happen when you are flying a light aircraft and run out of fuel forcing you to land on the motorway amongst traffic. It wasn’t pretty but we walked away unscathed and without a scratch to the aircraft or any other 3rd party property. Pretty lucky I guess.

Enough of that though. Moving on.

It’s been some fun and games recently. I have been playing Bob The Builder for a while and it’s coming out great even if I do have to say so myself. I might even put a pic or 2 up once it’s complete. Contractors piss me off to no end but I guess that should be expected. They are notorious for being unreliable. I just don’t understand why people who complain that business is so tough these days can care so little about communicating with the client. Maybe money and future business isn’t that big a deal for these guys. Oh well. Their loss I suppose.

Apart from life being lived, the countdown is almost up for the holiday. Since aviation is a thing of the past for me, and I feel I have taken enough time off, it’s time to get back in the saddle. August is job search month. Bring it on. I am actually looking forward to it again.

So I guess that’s it. For now.

Off The Hoox – Going Offline

Going Offline 01I have given it a bit of thought and have decided to shut down, or should I say, just leave dormant, Off The Hoox. At least for now. At least for a while.

I have a few reasons and again most of which I don’t care to discuss but I guess the biggest reason is that I just don’t get the kick out of it that I used to. Things change. People change. Some things stay the same while people change and I guess visa versa too! Cryptic as hell I know but that not important. As you can see I have posted less and less over the past little while and now it’s going to stop.

My life is changing too and I guess living it out on the internet is also losing it’s appeal. Perhaps a life with a bit of privacy could be a good thing. Just like everyone else.

I don’t know if I will be down forever. This might just be a sabbatical. I really don’t know. Thanks to all that have been so supportive and commented through all the ups and downs. To hell with the people that weren’t. Hahaha. We can’t please everyone in life now can we? But it’s ok. The world needs you too! :-)

Hasta la vista, baby! Stay kewl. See you around. Hopefully in the real world.

Dentists suck!

I hate the dentist. I hate the dentist. I hate the dentist!

At the cricket some weeks ago I chipped a tooth or rather I should say a side piece of a tooth came off next to a filling. I cringed. I knew it was going to hurt and I was right. Then the bigger fear set in. I hate the dentist!

So in my wisdom I thought if I just left it long enough the pain would go away. Believe it or not the theory actually worked. Eventually! But I had to think that I will one day soon be travelling to crazy paces again and I really don’t want to have to attempt a dentist in these places again. Also KP threatened me with my life if I never went!

So eventually I agreed. And I went last week. Now the dentist thinks I’m crazy. See why!

IMG_0427

KP, the adrenalin junkie majmun from Alibanya came along!

Turns out it was 100% pain free. This was the best dentist I have ever been to in my life! I am going back next week to quickly fix one filling and have a good clean and I’m done. How’s THAT? Brilliant!

Off the radar

This seems to becoming a habit lately and I don’t really have a good reason or excuse. Sometimes blogging just falls to the back of my head when other life is carrying on.

Things haven’t really been too exciting I must admit. There has been some IPL cricket going on where we (mate and I) have attended the matches at St Georges Park in Port Elizabeth. Again today is another match at 4:30 which we will be cheering for excitedly. I have no idea who is playing but we just go along for the atmosphere.

Voting was pretty kewl. Actually I found it very funny. I had to vote at the wrinkly farm, which is the unofficial nickname that we have given the old age home around the corner from my house, and I got there early to avoid crazy queues. Just as well because queues around the country went ballistic and were 500+ people long in some places. Getting there early though before opening time meant that I had to wait anyways for the door to open. I was now surrounded by residents of the wrinkly farm and I couldn’t help but laugh. It truly seemed like a snippet out of an episode of “Waiting for God” or “Grumpier old men”. Some old duck who must have been 95+ wobbling through on her Zimmer was ordered to the back of the line by some sour looking old fart of about 65. He just barked, “We are all waiting here, what gives you the right?”  Fortunately sense prevailed with the assistance of some other old ducks and she was led up to the front otherwise I think she really would have kicked it before reaching the voting booth.

Vote Morning

Voting results were announced and of course to no surprise, Egghead Zuma and his fuckwit cronies have taken the seat of power. What the country is very relieved about though is that he never did achieve the 2/3rds majority so we have some level of sanity hopefully. What does fuck me off intensely though are the lethargic, bleating, cry me a fucking river, pseudo South Africans abroad. After all the complaints and fighting with the Constitutional Court etc for the RIGHTS of South Africans to vote abroad, less than 10 000 bothered to show up! Roughly 7000 in London and around 1500 in Canberra I think it was. Thanks very much to those who did. For those who didn’t, unless you had a very good reason like you were not registered (which is questionable in its own accord), or you were in theatre donating a kidney to save the queen, or you were busy saving 14 kids from a burning bus at the time, you can all fucking go to hell! Burn your South African passport as you should no longer have the right to carry it. You have forgotten about your country and so your country should forget about you. Stop wearing the Springbok jersey “with pride” and bleat about how fucked up your country is getting back home. You let South Africa down in her time of need but still we managed to curb the ANC without you. We don’t need you! Think of that, less than 10 000 cared enough!

I have to go out now. I will continue catching up later!

Peace!
