My little can of beans

So who would have figured that after a most challenging day of doing what I do best in our little existence here in Zeroville, that I would come home to relax, lie on the couch and have my ass kicked? Did you see it coming? I sure as hell didn’t.

So my nice comfortable tight little lid on my little can of beans was ripped from it’s place of false security and my ass was kicked so hard that my beans scattered everywhere for everyone to see. Actually it was an everyone of one! And actually the ass kicking was in the most mind blowing way possible.

How?

If I had to answer 3 seemingly easy questions and instantly failed to do so, my questions would be answered for me. Just as instantly. Answered in a way that no one could. No one has that information. Its my can. They’re my beans! Until now.

Have you ever had your story told to you in bullet points? Its really something else. Especially when the story teller keeps hitting the nail on the head.

How?

Alright, so for now forget the how. Its the reality that counts. I question too much. I analyze. Its in me. I’m a trouble shooter, solution provider and fault finder. I need to stop finding faults and focus on other talents.

Moving forward its time to rub my ass and scoop my beans back together but this time trying to leave the lid off. There are some amazing beans in there that I have to let breathe and soak in some sunshine.

Keep the faith

Lost & Found – Cyanide and Happiness

This feels like an average day out here in Zeroville, the land of the Viper. Sometimes you just have to wake up like Tommy the Tank Engine – “I know I can, I know I can!”

A wise owl once told me…

Not so long ago I was having a conversation with a wise old owl about life in general, contract work and relationships etc. Yeah, it was one of those “solve the world’s problems” kind of late night beer chat where most of the solutions are forgotten in the morning. One thing I do remember from the conversation however was damn funny at the time but thinking about it later is actually quite profound. I’m not sure where he got it from so I’m not quoting word for word.

Here goes:

“Getting back together with an ex is like taking some milk from the fridge and pouring a glass only to discover that it is sour so you put the milk back in the fridge hoping that it will taste better tomorrow.”

Battered

Oh why does the quality of a weekend party always have to be directly proportional to intensity of the hangover that ensues. Saturday was great, on the outside. Saturday night was not so great, on the inside. Sunday just became a dozy blur of rugby, food, incredible amounts of rehydrating liquids and sleep. Go the Bokke! ZZzzz

Daniel Powter – Bad Day

Another great video! This is a song from the past.
I was shown it once upon a time back on a project up in the hills near a crazy little town in middle of complete nowhere. It always brings a smile!

Unexpected London

The beauty of the little red book, being the British Passport, is that it means very little consideration has to be given to travels plans including routing and destination. Most importantly, NO VISAS!

My original plan was to fly from Johannesburg to Tirana via an Istanbul layover. Admittedly this was purely out of habit as this is the way I have travelled before. And that’s they way Puccino travelled before. Something clicked in my head the day I was buying the ticket, which happened to be a few days before flying, and I checked other airlines and other routes. Well blow me down and feed me biscuits! I was expecting to pay roughly $1400 on Turkish Airlines which included a crappy layover in Istanbul. I was pleasantly shocked to see Virgin Atlantic with a direct flight to London at $590. Way less than half the price! London, here I come! With the British passport, the gates just open! Hello world!

virgin

I was an idiot! I thought that it would be really kewl to try and slum it into town along with the other young travelling backpackers on the trains and tubes etc. Perhaps in a way trying to regain my youth if not for more than just a fleeting moment. I repeat, I was an idiot! What a stupid idea! Heavy bags, rush hour on the trains, delays, tickets which ended up costing me more than I bargained for and the fact that I actually hadn’t slept properly for about a week trying to sort my life out. It ended up costing me about 20 quid and 4 hours of my life let alone the pain in my back, neck and shoulders from lugging my crap up and down a million stairs. When I asked a mini cab how much a Heathrow pickup was he said about 35 quid. For the sake of 3 or 4 pints! Arrgghhhh! NEXT TIME!!!

Earlsfield

It was fabulous to see all the old faces. Well not old but you know what I mean. Happy Bean and Katz, Knackers and Puddle Duck, Mildew, Fairlane and J9, Stu and Hawks, Syko and of course Shazza who was kind enough to offer me a bed for 2 nights. It was awesome to be back. I say that tentatively cos I have always felt that London is a great place to visit. I stand firm in the belief that the warm and fuzzy feeling would wear off quite soon and it would be a drag to live in again!

I got some shopping done. Some drinking. Some more drinking. A little more shopping. And mostly more drinking. It was a very necessary trip career wise as well as I managed the opportunity to catch up with an old boss and discuss future possibilities! Always a good beer when money is discussed.

I knew it was going to be a fleeting trip and that is exactly what it was. I achieved a hell of a lot in 2 days and then it was time to go.

Thanks everyone for such a good time!

Soldiers striking?

In what world is the backbone of any country’s defence allowed to strike? Oh, in this world it seems. In the crazy world of South Africa. Here we have our military in illegal protest that turned into a riot. Fantastic. What is happening to this country? It seems everyone can have a strike. Doctors, Metro Police, World Cup construction workers etc etc and now the military. The useless bastards of today’s military have demands of a 30% pay increase and suddenly it turns into a petrol bomb and rubber bullet party after destroying government property. What do they even do for their salaries?

“Defying a court order, engaging in unnecessary violent behaviour, causing damage to private and public property and attempting to invade the seat of government is totally unacceptable,” said government spokesperson Themba Maseko”

Military

“Several soldiers and a policeman were injured, reported SAPA. Some police and military vehicles were also damaged by a petrol bomb.”

“"While acknowledging that that soldiers’ march was illegal, Cosatu nevertheless believes that the reaction by the police – with stun grenades and rubber bullets – was reckless and excessive," said spokesman Patrick Craven, reported SAPA”

In many countries, action like attempting to invade the seat of government is usually considered an uprising or coup and likely to to be declared mutiny or treason and punishable by death. Our police just get reprimanded for excessive force

Just to add salt to the wound, you get some prick Shaheed Mahomed of the Workers International Vanguard League saying ridiculous statements like “Soldiers should have the full right to protest as well as the right to strike”. But then again, this brain box also feels that “We fully support the right of soldiers to elect their leaders in the army and that their leaders should be subject to instant recall.” Soldiers electing the generals? This isn’t the fucking boy scouts! Oh hang on, perhaps it is!

One step closer to the Banana Republic! Whatever!

And now we have a cat!

I don’t really know what’s going on but one thing I can assure you is that I don’t have a sign that says Dr Doolittle outside on my front gate. Can people please advise the neighbourhood animals of this.

A few days ago, early Tuesday I think it was, a cat roamed in off the street and promptly made itself comfortable in my house. It’s a gorgeous cat so I guess I didn’t have the heart to kick it up the ass and send it packing. I probably should have though since three days later it’s still here. Gorgeous little thing wouldn’t you agree?

Cat00

Only problem now is trying to find it’s rightful owner. I have been to all the local shops and checked out the notice boards. I have even looked at all the vets and vet accessory places for “lost cat” signs but so far I have seen nothing. I am sceptical about putting signs up with a photo cos I’m worried that some arb person, upon seeing this gorgeous animal, calls to claim it when it’s not theirs. Everyone agrees. All the advice I have received so far is telling me that this is quite normal and that it could hang around a few days and then bugger off home. If after that it’s still here, then it has decided to move house and we have a new pet. That isn’t kewl. I mean it really is an amazing animal so as runaways go this is a great one to get but I can’t help but feel heart sore when I think about some poor kid that had just lost it’s beloved cat. Hopefully these people will care enough to start putting signs up or contact the vets dammit! If they don’t care enough to do that then I can start to see why it bailed on them in the first place. Anyway, I will continue the hunt tomorrow.

Wish me luck. Here kitty kitty! Pssst Pssst
