Fixed DJ Hoox

After uploading a HipCast song (which is how I put media into posts) for the first time in a really long time, I realized that I wasn’t as slick at doing it anymore. I added the song, tried to change something and WHAM, it was all gone. I wanted to cry. Take a look at the page and you will see why. There’s a LOT to recreate!

I had to rebuild it ALL almost from scratch.

Juke

Fortunately for me WordPress, who hosts this blog, has a fantastic search tool as a add-on widget and I was able to find all previous posts and then it was just down to some time consuming fancy copy and paste.

This however made me view everything again and fortunately so since it seems I had been lazy from time to time and not added some media as I posted it. It is now completely up to date and working perfectly again. Until I mess around with it again.

Take a look while it’s still alive.

I see you and I raise you 5

I wont be able to expand on what I am about to say but I think that you will get the gist of it all:

I highly recommend handing in your resignation in a way of securing the raise that you have been asking for over the past 4 years. It seems life is game of Poker but be careful, you have to mean what you say and if you don’t have a backup plan it could very rapidly turn into a deadly game of Russian Roulette with an unfortunate outcome.

Right now it’s Poker for me and I hold all the cards. I have even snuck a joker or two up my sleeve just to spice it up a wee bit.

Travel is fun

Since my last post there have been some notable notes worth noting. The first starts with my departure from South Africa. The rest will be written about in further posts.

Another flight, another airline, another terminal, another departure lounge. This time it was good. I felt alive. I had made some pretty heavy decisions and now it was time to act on them. I was floating. For the first time in a long time I felt free. No more fighting. God it was amazing.

After a little wait in a little line we eventually boarded the aircraft. I was sat half way down in seat 36A. Next to me was this lovely woman who was traveling to Russia with her husband. We chatted a bit. After closing the doors we started our taxi to the runway. Just before taking off the plane started moving and then quickly swung around and we started a taxi back to the terminal. The captain came across the PA system and announced that he had just received urgent information from the company advising him that the aircraft had been loaded incorrectly and we were completely out of balance. We had to return to reload the cargo and baggage. I laughed. I laughed so hard. These poor people had no idea that I was the jinx. People started complaining so I felt it was my duty to set things straight. In a strong voice I commented to the complainers that we should all be VERY grateful that they realised this when they did and not once we had gone over 300mph past the point of no return on takeoff. That did shut people up.

I just sat there thinking, “If we get asked to get off then that’s it, I’m not getting back on. My new life starts now”. We never did get asked to leave so I guess that means that I have to settle things the right way.

They opened the bar so we knew we were going to be there a while. I drank wine, we laughed and joked about all sorts of things and eventually about 2 hours later we took off. We were en route to London.

This flight was amazing. Even though I was crammed up in economy I felt good. I was so happy. I fell asleep with a big smile on my face.

Arriving over London in the early hours was incredible. I opened my eyes to an incredible view of a blanket of snow that had recently rested over the entire country. The sun was just coming up and through three thin layers of cloud it radiated over the countryside and it felt warm. I was awake with a smile. I confirmed then that I was making the right decision and it was time for massive change.

We landed and made our way through the notorious Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport and boy it didn’t let us down. A mountain of baggage awaited us as we arrived. I chuckled. It took a further 2 hours for our belongings to make it from the aircraft to the carrousel and when it finally arrived people cheered. I simply smiled, grabbed my bag and made my way outside into the crisp icy air. Blowing mist breathe while walking to the taxi that I had ordered I felt like a tourist. This was no longer my place. I was here now to make a change. I am heading home.

End of chill – For now…

This last week has been manic. Some huge fights but mostly huge fun. I have managed to catch up with so many people and also make some pretty important life changing decisions.

During my travels over the last week I was dozing off on a flight when suddenly I woke up with a start. It was my own little epiphany. I registered something deep down inside. Something that has been manifesting for some time and something that I have even spoken about more and more recently but not truly understanding it. What I came to see clear as day was the realization that for the past 6 or so years, the only real peace I have found is when I am asleep on an airplane. My phone is switched off, there is no-one to fight with, no real stress (unless there is a screaming child but you cant have it all now can you?) and my life is in someone else’s hands to get me somewhere safely.

I am alienating everything on the ground. This must change. This will change. Soon. Watch this space.

This has been a wonderful trip. I managed to get so much accomplished. I got to walk my Magic Bean down the isle, I got to catch up with good friends, I got to renew my pilot’s license, I got to see my folks in Durban and most importantly somewhere along the way I managed to see a new route for my life and I am very excited about it.

For the mean time, I am back to my life of travel again tonight. I fly to London for the sole purpose of submitting my passport for a visa in the Angolan Embassy. I will stay in London for 5 days and then fly back to Luanda next week Friday via Lisbon. Then things will start to change. I need to plan carefully. God I am so excited about this.

Opportunity Opportunity!

National Cleavage Day! 2008 – Part2

Mark it up in your calendar. It’s official:
04 April 2008 is National Cleavage Day 2008!

It’s true, it’s up and we are ready to go.

I got the official press release from the organisers (I’m not sure if I can mention her name) which pretty much declares the day on. Go for it. Get ready. I have more information expected in the near future.

Although it seems official events have not been set up yet, they are mentioning there will be some activity at Billie the BUMS, Frankie Bananaz and Cubana Latino.

Also stay tuned to Radio 5:

Tell 5FM’s Gareth Cliff How you Wear the Bra from 31 March to 4 April to win the Uber Wear the Bra prize – you will Wear the Bra, Be a Star. Think Jetsetter life!!

My last post I suggested: “And since it will be for a very good cause, I will set up a scheme for OffTheHoox to make a donation with your help and input as we have done in the past”.

Now, to put my money where my mouth (keyboard) is, I have decided that you and I together can do some good. I will pledge R10.00 per cleavage photo (that I can post online) to a charity that I will name later. Again, I will need to put a capped limit of R1000 to save from bankrupting me. Perhaps there are others out there that will add to the limit and then who knows how far we can go. You can start sending the photos immediately and I will be posting them between 31 March and 4 April.

Email your photos HERE:
OffTheHoox@gmail.com and please make the subject NCD

All photos will remain anonymous and I can assist with photo editing if faces should be removed should you wish but don’t know how. Just mention that in the email. Otherwise, they will all go up untouched.

All I ask is that you keep it authentic. Please don’t be posting any pics that are not your own, pics that others may not want online or random pics that you have found on the internet.

Let everybody know about it. It’s for a GREAT cause!

I have created a page dedicated to this event. Keep coming back for updates closer to the time: National Cleavage Day 2008!

More to come!

Name the 6-string

It’s funny how one blog post can lead to another. This started from the most recent Titillating Tuesday – Music

To summarize briefly. I have a guitar on site with me. Its a standard Yamaha Acoustic without any electric pickup. I don’t know if I will be able to take it with me when I leave. Lou from 123 Blog Myself suggested I take it with me. I said it must then have a name so special and so right that I would feel guilty leaving it behind.

Here’s the challenge:

Name the 6-string. But since I have two guitars we might as well kill two birds with one stone. The second one is a small electric Fender Squire and since I don’t actually have it with me I figure I should just put Google Image pics up of both of them just to show what they look like even though they are not the real deal.

Something original? Something sexy? Something subtle for the Acoustic? Something hot for the Electric?

They both sound incredible. They have both been played by very experienced guitarists and received nothing but huge compliments.

Here you go. Yamaha on the left. Fender Squire on the right.

Yamaha Fender Squire

Be nice. Be Gentle. They have feelings you know!

Goedgedacht Success!

The Hoox / Goedgedacht Christmas Card Appeal was a great success in my eyes and certainly in the eyes of the wonderful little children it set out to help.

What I set out to achieve was achieved in a fraction of the time that I anticipated. I encouraged readers to buy or sell on cards and promised to match pack for pack (to a cap of 100 cos I’m not a millionaire) and by God that was hit within days especially thanks to Lou from 123 Blog Myself.

Instead of me buying 100 packs of cards I simply donated the value of the 100 packs (R2, 000) to The Goedgedacht Trust thus allowing then to have these cards to sell on further. Some weeks passed and the cards continued to sell although at a slower pace. It seems email Christmas wishes is the preferred method of delivery these days. Never-the-less, even 1 pack sold is 1 pack better for the children. I think a total of +- 150 packs from OffTheHoox was sold making a total sum of R3, 000

In the final days I received an email from an old mate of mine that I had worked with in North Africa suggesting that he would like to contribute but didn’t need the cards and asked if there was any way he could just make a donation. That opened up further avenues instantly. I sent out a plea email to my project colleagues here (against company policy I might add) and I got an amazing response. With the combination of cash and money transfers to my account in the UK I was able to collect it all together and send through a whopping R10, 000 ($1, 456) as a lump sum donation.

I would like to thank everyone that I have not been able to thank personally for the huge efforts put in. I know it’s hard to imagine in our comfortable worlds but you really have made a huge difference to wonderful children and you gave them an extra special Christmas full of food, fun, love and laughter. THANK YOU!

Grand total for an incredible cause: R15, 000 / $2, 184

Halifax vs HSBC

Some time ago I wrote about the pains of getting a bank account set up when you first arrive in the UK. When I first arrived, and the same was for all my mates that arrived, you essentially had to give DNA samples, jump through 23 hoops of fire and offer the bastards your first born child. It seems things have changed somewhat.

I wrote about the HSBC passport which, for £60, was the answer to all your new banking needs with cards and open account etc without the pains of trying to prove that you have lived somewhere for 6 months when you had just arrived. It was meant to be a simple setup and away you go. I have not had this confirmed as yet, however, a traveler named Andy who commented on the first entry has been so kind as to give us some feedback which is even better news and not with HSBC.

Thanks Andy!

Hoox… You’re such a Pilot

Things have been ticking over in my head faster than usual and for once I feel that I actually might even have a little bit of direction in my life. I can actually see it now. And it’s a bit scary. Hoox has a life plan! No shit!

This is kind of my plan and I am putting it out there to the universe! Listen to ME!

  • I will be out of Albania by 15 Jan 08 – End of contract
  • I will be in Houston by 01 Feb 08 – New contract prep
  • I will be in Angola by 15 Mar 08 – New contract mobilize
  • I will be in Angola until 20 Dec 09 – All systems running
  • I will be in Port Elizabeth by 20 Feb 10 – Start CPL ground school
  • I will be in Port Elizabeth until 01 Jul 11 – Get my Commercial Pilots Licence
  • I will kick back for a couple of months to regroup and do aircraft type ratings
  • I will get my hands on a Cessna 208B Grand Caravan and prepare to save the world
  • I will then join or start an organization flying aid and/or medical assistance into Africa
  • During hours of downtime I will then write a Pulitzer / Nobel Peace Prize winning autobiography including tales of misadventure, woes and rants and raves photographed by none other than yours truly.
  • Punish a well deserved Klippies and coke and a packet of Lays

What is most frightening is that I could probably cut off lines 2, 3 & 4 and fast track this life to Port Elizabeth. I will leave that with the gods of the corporate world to determine that outcome. How much money is enough?
