AA Spiral Guide

Even when travelling around your own country it is advisable at times to get yourself a great guide book to ensure you don’t miss out on anything that may interest you along the way. The only problem is when these guides get it wrong. What’s odd with this statement: “Above: Sunset on Durban beach”? Found in the AA Spiral Guide of South Africa.

Sunset Durban

If you can’t guess or are not from South Africa so have little idea where Durban is, I will give it to you. Durban is on the east coast of South Africa. The sun (even in Africa as backward as it is) still rises in the east. Therefore, there is NO SUCH THING as a sunset on a Durban beach. If you are lucky and crazy enough to wake up that early then you may just be in time to catch a “Sunrise on Durban Beach”

Bunch of CHUMPS!

Off The Hoox – Going Offline

Going Offline 01I have given it a bit of thought and have decided to shut down, or should I say, just leave dormant, Off The Hoox. At least for now. At least for a while.

I have a few reasons and again most of which I don’t care to discuss but I guess the biggest reason is that I just don’t get the kick out of it that I used to. Things change. People change. Some things stay the same while people change and I guess visa versa too! Cryptic as hell I know but that not important. As you can see I have posted less and less over the past little while and now it’s going to stop.

My life is changing too and I guess living it out on the internet is also losing it’s appeal. Perhaps a life with a bit of privacy could be a good thing. Just like everyone else.

I don’t know if I will be down forever. This might just be a sabbatical. I really don’t know. Thanks to all that have been so supportive and commented through all the ups and downs. To hell with the people that weren’t. Hahaha. We can’t please everyone in life now can we? But it’s ok. The world needs you too! :-)

Hasta la vista, baby! Stay kewl. See you around. Hopefully in the real world.

Going Offline 02

KP – The Cape Malay

10 points for KP!
New place, new food…

We are sitting in Calitzdorp (another spot in the middle of freaking nowhere) having lunch at a kewl local spot that makes great traditional fare.

KP asked what Babotie is and I badly described it ending off saying “just have it, it’s good, I love it”. So she did. And she enjoyed it! Only kewl people like Bobotie! Those who don’t…. just don’t!

I just died…

… and went to pancake heaven!

Ignore what I said about gluttony last night. This is the business!

If you ever get a chance to go to Langebaan, South Africa, you really would be doing yourself a dis-service if you don’t visit Pancakes Galore & Coffee Bar for a breakfast treat and a kick ass pancake for dessert!

I’m such a pig but I’m ok holiday! Still! I’m going to have to jog alongside the car for the rest of the roadtrip just to work all this off.

This one is a chocolate mouse with softserve ice cream pancake with additional bananas as an extra! You can’t go wrong!

My take on Idols SA 5

When Pop Idols first kicked off in the UK I hated it and then continued to hate all of it through all the international versions and all the ridiculous seasons. Most of the hype has died down now and there’s only a few people left who will comment on it. I hate to have to admit it, but I think my views have changed somewhat.

I saw bits of pieces of sporadic episodes over the last handful of weeks going into months and I cringed at some of the pitiful efforts made by some entrants. I think I’m getting soft now because now I feel that they at least deserve the credit for getting up there and giving it a shot. Now in South Africa we are on season 5 and it’s been narrowed down to the remaining X number (I think it was 10) of contestants. I watched it from start to finish last night and I must say I actually found it very entertaining. These people actually have talent and although they are not superstar quality yet you can see that they could be without a lot of work. Am I converted? I don’t know.

And as for the judges, what a mixed bag. We have to remember that Idols is a concept just as “Who wants to be a millionaire” with a general template that should be used worldwide therefore you will always have your good cop / bad cop aspect and a couple of inbetweeners. Makes for interesting debate. I actually like all the judges.

Idols 2

Dave is the serious one. Very blunt but gets his message across in a clear concise way. Not much room for misunderstanding his opinion.

Mara is sweet. She just wants to love and hug everyone and tell them they are all fantastic and gets emotional very easily. Very sweet! Good cop.

Gareth I rate highest out of all of them. When he speaks he actually makes sense. He uses constructive criticism and explains himself very well. If I ever met him I would have to shake his hand and thank him for bringing a level of normality to the show. I like hearing what he has to say.

Randall is just the filler of an unfortunate position. He gets slated daily but what people don’t usually get, is that it is the position of the asshole not him. It all went back to Simon Cowell who was the king of asshole. It’s just that Simon could pull it off better, didn’t stumble over his own words or fuck up clichéd sayings when trying to be a twat. I actually kinda feel sorry for Randall and I’m sure off the show he could be quite a nice chap if given half the chance. I hope he is paid well for his position. Bad cop.

Idols 01

I was actually quite moved last night when Mara asked everyone to stand up and have a moments silence in respect for Jason, one of the contestants, who lost his brother the week before. For a second it looked like Randall was not going to stand and I just angrily thought, “My man, you will be committing professional suicide if you are the twat now!” He did stand however and I quickly went back to feeling sorry for him.

All in all I think South Africa actually does have some good talent and I am looking forward to seeing more episodes and watch them progress. Who knows, maybe by season 7, I could even start voting!

I’m Dirty Paw

It is I, Hoox, that was born here in God’s country of South Africa, on this day, 17 January, back in ‘75. If you do the maths correctly, that makes me Dirty Paw (34) today. My last birthday of Dirty Tree turned out to be the best one ever celebrating until very late into the night on multiple occasions with great people. Photos tell a million stories the morning after! Enough said!

Dirty Paw

This year is definitely going to be quieter and that’s because I ain’t doing anything. This place is the Sleepy Hollow as I have mentioned before but suddenly this weekend there are plans galore with something happening all the time. I have to check my schedule. There’s one mate who chose Friday night to celebrate his 30th and one newly engaged couple choosing Saturday night to have their engagement party. Suits me cos I get to have two pissups at someone else’s expense! And this way too I don’t get to do any of those ridiculous “Hey-its-your-birthday-drink-this-crazy-concoction” down downs! It’s called living under the radar. Love it!

This birthday is being celebrated during my sabbatical from life. Loving it. Here it is, I’m THIRTY FOUR! Oh my God! Hahahaha. It’s way too early for a midlife crisis!

DIRTY PAW!

Dirty Paw 01(Getting Dirty by harddtripp)

It’s Hic Hic Hooray and a bottle of rum for me!

Next year is Dirty Dive (hmm Double D – DD)/Skive/Jive/Strive but mostly Survive (35). The big one however that I am looking forward to is the following year of Dirty Sex or Dirty Pix/Flicks/Tricks/Licks (36). Hahaha. It’s meant to be!

Life in the slow lane

So now I have a little car, a little house on a little street, with a little TV that I can watch on my little sofa. I have a little bed that I can get a little sleep on so that I can be wide awake and energised for a little gym workout and a little bit of studying. I regularly pay for a little electricity and for a little laundry to be done. Is this what they call settling down?

I was really hoping that this sensation of accomplishment, satisfaction and peace and quiet would last forever but I think it’s running out. I wake up in the mornings and get ready for gym thinking, “Is that what life is all about?” What happened to that drive? What happened to that dying desire to go be a fly boy the rest of my life? I find myself lying awake at night missing the crazy lifestyle of war torn territories and 18 hour work days. I wonder, is that where I’m supposed to be?

Don’t get me wrong. I am having an amazing time here. I love Port Elizabeth. I love being close to amazing friends. I find it incredible that I actually for once in my life have a house and a car and a place that I can call home. That alone is one hell of an accomplishment for me. But what’s missing? Where’s that spark? Where’s that fire? Is there more to it or is this it? Perhaps it’s a certain special someone in my life? Do I need to go and get myself a girlfriend? Probably not. She would most likely just end up pissing me off again!

I just don’t know right now. It’s too early for a midlife crisis. Or is it? Will the human mind ever be satisfied? Or is it just me?
