Everything is…

… sunshine and roses again.

I would like to thank everyone for their concern and just for the record I was not about to throw myself off Van Stadens River bridge. I was very pissed off with a lot of mostly little stuff which all together made a big ball of shit to deal with at once. But I will say a lot of good came out of it all. I had contact with people that I have not spoken to in a long time and had discussions with others that helped me sort much of my stuff out. For now anyways. 8)

So thank you all for the kind words, the kicks in the butt, the support and the concern. Happy Hoox is back playing and the playground is open once again!

I hate the world today

~ Meredith Brooks – Bitch

I hate the world today
You’re so good to me
I know but I can’t change
tried to tell you but you look at me like maybe I’m an angel underneath
Innocent and sweet
Yesterday I cried
You must have been relieved to see the softer side
I can understand how you’d be so confused
I don’t envy you
I’m a little bit of everything all rolled into one

Everything in this world is so God damned superficial. What you see isn’t really real. What you feel are feelings of the past simply returning to haunt you. Nothing ever actually changes. Life is just a playground of swings and roundabouts. Just the same old aging shit with different children passing through! The children grow up and move away. But still you are stuck with your playground of aging shit! You give give give and the fleeting children take take take. I’m all out of breath. I need to close this playground

Welcome to my head. It’s a fucking playground. Packed full of aging shit! This is what is going on… :

(Limp Bizkit – Behind Blue Eyes)

No one knows what its like
To feel these feelings
Like I do, and I blame you!
No one bites back as hard
On their anger
None of my pain and woe
Can show through

But my dreams they aren’t as empty
As my conscience seems to be
I have hours, only lonely
My love is vengeance
That’s never free

I have this feeling inside that I just cannot shake. It’s like the feeling of imminent danger. Like something bad is about to happen. I’m feel like I’m waiting for the phone call of bad news. Or is it me that’s about to get hit by a bus? It’s like the bruised and winded feeling of a severe hit to the chest! It’s been with me since the weekend and I actually feel quite ill. It wasn’t even a bad weekend. We went flying. It was great fun but now I just don’t give a shit about it anymore. Yesterday was a bad day. I sat in the aircraft staring out the window wondering if this is as good as it gets. My head was killing me, my stomach in a twisted knot and a foul mood from hell. Is this my mind playing tricks again? Maybe its indigestion! Maybe it’s the result of 20+ wasps / hornets stinging me in the head while we were pulling the camp.

I have found myself asking repeatedly, “What the hell is this all for?” No one is really happy anymore. For these fleeting moments in life when you feel good about yourself? Love? That’s a joke! Almost everyone I know is either getting divorced or breaking up. What the hell am I doing back here? Settle down? I felt more settled in a freaking war zone getting bombed every day!

I came to a few conclusions this morning while killing myself on the treadmill and then while suffocating myself in the sauna. Some clarity. Which is very unclear given my frame of mind. I’m holding out making any rash decisions for sake of regret.

This weekend’s shenanigans

This weekend promises to be a good one. So far this week the weather has been miserable (for some, as I don’t really mind strong winds and rain), so not a lot has been going on. Indoor activities on bad weather days are better left unspoken.

I can’t recall if I mentioned before or not but I am taking kite surfing lessons these days. I tried it on my own some years ago and almost ended up in hospital having a knee operation. Be careful! I planned to go for my kite surfing lesson on Wednesday but the wind was blowing so strong I reckon a layer of paint got sandblasted from my car so it was decided, unless I wanted to visit Madagascar on my first attempt, it was probably not a wise idea. I had to agree with my life!

Today is a beautiful day. Sun is shining, wind has calmed and all spirits are high for the weekend.

Tonight is J9’s birthday bash. Happy happy girl. She has booked a party bus which does a pub crawl to her stipulated venues of choice. I know these venues. I know it’s going to be a joll (Party!). The bus stops early but PE is small so a taxi fare from the last venue home is nothing compared to the pain and heartache of having to leave this fiasco early! The theme is Carnival, think Rio. My mind hurts. Here is a brief communication between me and the birthday girl (J9):

carnival bum

Hoox: Theme Rio Carnival? All very well and good for the girls and of course for all the guys looking at all the girls but what the hell do guys wear? I can assure you now, no one in PE is going to be even remotely impressed if I show up oiled to the max wearing nothing but a g-string and nipple caps with tassels. London, yeah. New York, kewl. Rio, abso-freakin-lutely. PE … ummm … I think not!!

J9: I just wanted to keep living the Rio dream for a wee while longer, but as you mentioned I don’t quite think the theme is going to take off. In fact I don’t think people really tend to read the fine print, so most likely you would be the only sad soul (and moj) that turns up dressed up to the max. G-strings and nipple caps with tassels may just scare off the more conservative amongst us. Best to keep it clean (well for the first few minutes anyway). Have a sneaking suspicion that tonight is going to be raucous and quite out of hand… gotta love it:-)
Sooooo… do wear whatever takes your fancy. Pretty open minded, so if G-strings are your thing you’re welcome bebe. I am sure you’ll give them a show;-)

As much as I would like to think I am brave enough to pull this off, I am going to chicken out. This is a VERY small town. The only time the Sleepy Hollow wakes up is when there is scandal and gossip. I’m new in town and have to make a good impression! 8)

Anyhow, LNELL and I are leaving the party early. This is because we are responsible adults and conscientious when it comes to obeying the stipulated rules and regulations of aviation regarding alcohol consumption and timing thereof and more importantly, life preservation! Mostly the latter but it looks good to throw in the other crap as well. This weekend we are flying to Gatiep (Gariep Dam) which is about 2-3 hours away and camping overnight. Barefoot Airways ZS-FUP is on the move again. This time a scheduled layover is planned and possibly a second stop on the [family’s] farm on the way back. Might come back Sunday, maybe Monday, even Tuesday if we decide to go somewhere else too! Not as regular a routine schedule as our other competing airlines (SAA, 1-Time, BA, Kulula) but we certainly have a hell of a lot more fun!

So, without further ado, I hereby wish you all a very very happy weekend and see you when I see you. Maybe Wednesday! Hahahaha

To infinity and beyond ~ My hero, Buzz Lightyear!

International football – Sleepy Hollow style

And here we are. An international match. Russia’s Moscow FC vs South Africa’s Jomo Cosmos. It’s 10 minutes in and it’s 0-0 but you can see from the crowd that is now 25 strong, this game is riviting! Reporting to you live from the stadium.

Oh crap. Look I can’t keep this up. Its pants! I think we are going to blow this popcorn stand and join the rest of the world watching Obama’s inauguration.

Barefoot Airways : ZS-FUP

January 17. A spectacular day out flying.

Plan of action: Take off from Port Elizabeth, fly to Willowmore, fly to Outshoorn, fly to Mossel Bay, fly to George and return to Port Elizabeth. As per usual with the new starter airline, Barefoot Airways, it doesn’t usually end up as planned. But that’s the beauty of it. Just go with the flow and enjoy the views from the front row.

Barefoot Airways consists of two pilots, namely Hoox (myself) and LNELL. Passengers are of course welcome and for this trip the lucky soul was a great girl, J9, who I cornered into saying yes just the night before at a party while she was hallucinating from the effects of a large dose of penicillin and other potential narcotics (all prescribed I have been assured). I gave her the call at 7:30 waking her up and telling her she had to be at the airport by 8:00. Very cruel I know but would you believe it, she made it on time. She can show you girls a thing or two about getting ready in under 2 hours! All that was left now was pre-flight inspections of the aircraft and passenger briefing.

Barefoot Airways

The passenger briefing was short and sweet. “Rule 1 : No shoes!. Rule 2 : Don’t talk while we are talking to Air Traffic Control (ATC). Rule 3 : Take loads of photos and have fun! This is a list of our expected destinations however this can change en-route. Right lets go.” Like I said, pax briefing is short with Barefoot Airways.

Pictures speak a million words so I am going to shut up now. Most of these photos were taken by our ultra keen pax, J9. She also makes a great photographer. Go girl! Thanks.

I’m Dirty Paw

It is I, Hoox, that was born here in God’s country of South Africa, on this day, 17 January, back in ‘75. If you do the maths correctly, that makes me Dirty Paw (34) today. My last birthday of Dirty Tree turned out to be the best one ever celebrating until very late into the night on multiple occasions with great people. Photos tell a million stories the morning after! Enough said!

Dirty Paw

This year is definitely going to be quieter and that’s because I ain’t doing anything. This place is the Sleepy Hollow as I have mentioned before but suddenly this weekend there are plans galore with something happening all the time. I have to check my schedule. There’s one mate who chose Friday night to celebrate his 30th and one newly engaged couple choosing Saturday night to have their engagement party. Suits me cos I get to have two pissups at someone else’s expense! And this way too I don’t get to do any of those ridiculous “Hey-its-your-birthday-drink-this-crazy-concoction” down downs! It’s called living under the radar. Love it!

This birthday is being celebrated during my sabbatical from life. Loving it. Here it is, I’m THIRTY FOUR! Oh my God! Hahahaha. It’s way too early for a midlife crisis!

DIRTY PAW!

Dirty Paw 01(Getting Dirty by harddtripp)

It’s Hic Hic Hooray and a bottle of rum for me!

Next year is Dirty Dive (hmm Double D – DD)/Skive/Jive/Strive but mostly Survive (35). The big one however that I am looking forward to is the following year of Dirty Sex or Dirty Pix/Flicks/Tricks/Licks (36). Hahaha. It’s meant to be!

Airbus A320 crash hailed as “miraculous”

This is where pilots show what they are made of. When people call them “glorified bus drivers”, as I have mistakenly done in the past, they don’t truly understand that a pilot isn’t usually paid for what he does do, he is paid for what he can do!

The standard list of procedures in any major incident (ad lib)

  1. PANIC
  2. Pull yourself together
  3. Fly the aircraft
  4. Ascertain the details and severity of the situation
  5. DEAL WITH THE SITUATION!
  6. Get on the ground (or water in this case) in one piece ASAP
  7. Walk away with everyone alive

sully470

Following taken from BBC America

Pilot hailed for ‘Hudson miracle’

The pilot of an airliner that ditched in New York’s Hudson River has been hailed a hero after all 155 passengers and crew were rescued.

The US Airways Airbus A320 made the crash-landing minutes out of LaGuardia airport, both its engines apparently disabled by a flock of birds.

Passengers were rescued from the wings or helped from the icy water by divers.

Captain Chesley Sullenberger was praised by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg for his "masterful" landing.

The state governor spoke of a "miracle on the Hudson".

He [Capt Sullenberger] walked the plane twice after everybody else was off

Michael Bloomberg
Mayor of New York

The BBC’s Greg Wood reports from New York that it was a true delivery from disaster, a commercial airliner forced to ditch in the river just next to the skyscrapers of mid-town Manhattan but with no fatalities.

One person suffered two broken legs and paramedics treated 78 patients, most for minor injuries but, through a combination of luck, the skill of the pilot and a rapid emergency response, 155 people have had a very narrow escape, our correspondent says.

Air accident investigators are in New York to probe the cause of the incident.

And more from SMH.com.au:

Australian & International Pilots’ Association president Barry Jackson said Mr Sullenberger had just minutes to perform a delicate operation that, had it not been executed perfectly, could have resulted in the plane cartwheeling on impact with the water and potentially killing those on board.

And what I feel is in somewhat bad taste is the alleged advert that came out (albeit from an unreliable source) very shortly after the incident with the headline:
The Hudson Crash: Just One More Reason to Fly Virgin.

virgin-us-airways

I sincerely hope that this is just some prank email and hope that not even Virgin, although very sharp and witty with their advertising, would stoop this low and piggy back off something like this. But personally, I would rather fly US Airways who employ pilots with the skills shown by Capt Sully, Hero of the Hudson!

Life vs Movies

SUPPOSEDLY if you’ve seen over 85 films, you have no life. Mark the ones you’ve seen. There are 239 films listed (feel free to count and verify this – I couldn’t be assed). Copy this list somewhere that you can paste into like Word or an Email or something. Then, put X’s next to the films you’ve seen, add them up and click comments at the bottom to post your results. Have fun.

Titillating Tuesday – Sushi

So this is how my mind works. Yesterday I was just thinking how marvellous it would be to have a great helping of sushi tonight (being Tuesday). Since I had plans for last night, and it’s rude to turn down a good beer, I figured tonight would be a much better night. I have also had the odd request over the last while for a bit of a Passport Thrasher spice up again. And I thought, “Well I’ll be damned hey! Today is Tuesday! Correct? And what is the great thing about sushi on a Tuesday? Eating it off a naked body! Well perhaps only in my head which is why it’s great that it falls on an almost forgotten  about historical “Titillating Tuesday”. I did say I would show you how my mind works. I never offered an insight into brilliance!

So here we have it. For lack or a better theme (or for lack of a worse theme that is), here you have it after many dormant months, a quick return to Titillating Tuesday.

For all the TT fans out there! This one is for you! For everyone else, please close your eyes and come back again tomorrow. 8)

iPhoneModem 2

Some more great news on the iPhone front!

For iPhone3G owners like me who rely quite heavily on the internet for many aspects and who specifically require WiFi or 3G cellular carriers at home and away, here is your answer. iPhoneModem 2. It certainly spells a dream come true for me and my needs. It quite simply turns your iPhone3G into a 3G modem tethered (connected wirelessly) to your laptop (requires WiFi on the PC or laptop you are connecting).

iPhoneModem
My situation:

I have my iPhone that I use wirelessly very regularly for email, internet, weather checks, MSN Messenger among quite a few other smart iPhone apps. I don’t have access to a lot of standard WiFi hotspots being in Port Elizabeth, South Africa so I make use of  3G cellular  technology “expensively” (extensively).

Not everything I do though can be done on the iPhone so I also use my laptop extensively at home. Since I don’t have a home phone landline with an ADSL connection, in order for me to connect to the internet I had to buy a local carrier (Vodacom) external USB 3G modem card.

Thirdly, due to some issues I had with the iPhone talking to Vodacom, I had to use a second phone simply for voice calls. But that is a completely different topic. I am yet to test this now. Soon though.

All of the above require separate SIM cards, airtime and on the two 3G devices, data bundles. This is where it all got very expensive. The data bundle price breakdown is quite straight forward. The more you use, the cheaper it is per MB. 500MB is R189 and 1000MB (1GB) is R289 and so on and so forth. These all expire within 30 days. Apart from the pain of having to transfer airtime from device to device, it was also getting extremely expensive.

My ideal solution:

An iPhone that I could load with airtime, purchase a single larger data bundle for essentially less than two smaller bundles and be able to use them simultaneously. Have the laptop somehow connected to the iPhone so that it could piggy back off it’s 3G connection. This I know is very old news for Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson etc etc but strangely enough this is a new concept for Apple and the iPhone developers. I don’t understand the gain that Apple could have from withholding such technology. The pain is that they certainly look ridiculous and are seen in the consumer’s eyes as control freaks. This also is nothing new!

Cue the third party application, Addition’s iPhoneModem 2. This unfortunately is not a free app but will cost the princely sum of $9.99. There is however a free trial that you can download that shows you how wonderful it actually is.

The marvellous features in the paid version are things like it not disconnecting and reminding you to please pay, free upgrades later and also my all time favourite, it being able to run in the background so you can use other iPhone apps and make and receive calls and not have it drop the internet link while your iPhone is acting as your home’s wireless 3G modem. This requires the installation of SpringBoard which can be done for free via Installer or Cydia on a jailbreaked iPhone (look it up on Google or ask me here if you need guidance). On the link as I have given to Addition’s iPhoneModem 2 are all the instructions and everything you need to know about installing it, paying for it, registering it and other added features.

I hope you enjoy this as much as I do! This has been posted while connected to the internet on my laptop through my iPhone3G and making a phone call at the same time. It doesn’t get much better than this. And if it does I will surely pee in my pants!

Well done guys!
