Farewell Johannesburg

2 10 2008

The time has finally come. Tonight I move to Port Elizabeth. No more smog, no more hectic traffic, no more massive distances to travel to get anywhere, no more good weather! Yeah, that is a downside. The entire coast of South Africa has been beaten with a lot of bad weather lately whereas Johannesburg has had mostly pretty awesome days with wall to wall sunshine.

Johannesburg-South-Africa

It has been a long time coming and now I’m ready to go. My furniture (a bed and a desk) was picked up this morning, I have one flight left at Grand Central, and my bags are packed ready to be loaded into my car and to hit the road. Its a long drive but ends with a great destination.

It’s like any move really. You look forward to it until the time finally comes. It has been really awesome to have stayed with my great mate, G. We have a very similar sense of humour and we can just laugh and chat about damn near anything. I will miss that. To all my other Joburg mates too, take it easy, will catch up with you soon. You now have a place to stay when you visit Port Elizabeth. Yeah, in my house that I still haven’t seen yet!

I have had some really good times here. Along with the stress of ground school and everything else that Joburg can throw at you, I have had an all round great time here. It has changed quite a bit from when I last lived here but there’s still a lot of good old memories floating about. Thanks to everyone that made it a pleasant stay.

Next time we chat, I will be in Port Elizabeth. I might be offline for a short time while I get settled in but fear not, I will not be far away.

Viva the bright lights of Port Elizabeth!

Welcome to the Friendly City.

And if anyone else says that Port Elizabeth is not friendly I will see you behind the bicycle sheds for a bit of “How’s your Father!”

Hope your time here is great Hoox.

Drop me a mail if you want an intro to the flying club from a friend of a friend.

You could always try a bit of sailing as well ………………

Alan. If you can get him sailing, there’s a few cold wets in it for you. Ask him about Florida Lake, when I’d bought a fully fitted out Sprog at about three months’ salary, for the sole purpose of teaching him and Tango to sail. Until I found out about a year later after a monstrous capsize in freezing water, that I was the ONLY one interested !!!!!

Kiffie (you asked for it !!)
Saddies, leaving Jozi, and with a house in PE that makes it pretty close to final. Jozi has been your home, if anywhere is, so its quite a step. But as the man said,

The moving finger writes, and, having writ,
moves on: nor all thy piety nor wit
shall lure it back to cancel half a line,
nor all thy tears wash out a word of it.

Take care, boet.

Alan - Thanks pal. This certainly is the friendly city! I’ve not heard anyone say any different just yet so we can keep our dukes at bay and save them for a thrashing when some idiot does have something nasty to say about this wonderful place! My complaining online here however, which is inevitable at some stage, does not count ok. It will simply be me airing my views on a few topics that I feel could be looked at and changed. 8) As a matter of interest, which flying club is your friend of a friend affiliated with? We might already know each other! Hahaha. Drop me an email with your details offthehoox@gmail.com and we can hook up sometime! Cheers!

AH - I remember that. I also remember that I didn’t like sailing much. It was cold and wet and as a kid growing up I had better things to be doing on a Saturday than gibbing a sheet or cleaning a trailer. 8) And if I recall we weren’t allowed in the bar and there’s only so much fun you can have on the grass of Florida Lake. Hahahaha. I do have some fond memories of it too!

AH - Yup, leaving Joburg this time though felt good and more importantly it felt right. I was leaving for the right reasons which made it the right move. I think what with living in small camps and isolated environments, I found Johannesburg all too hectic and filled with completely unnecessary stresses. I think I hate traffic more than most. PE is great. Not too big and not too small and everyone is really friendly.
