South Africa Presidentless?

Last night the nation watched as (ex) President Thabo Mbeki resigned with a speech that declared his innocence of any wrong doing in the 14.5 years in parliament and most importantly in the latest dispute of Zuma and his potential trial. Where does that leave us now? I’m not qualified to make an educated decision but word on the street is we are going to be screwed for a while.

Are we officially presidentless? If the president and vice president walk then what happens? We now have a split parliament without a chief. Ok it was bad enough when we did have a chief that didn’t do much for this country but now there’s nothing and still a major power struggle going on. The ANC also declared that there is no need for an early election and they will nominate who will go and stand in and fill the roles. How is that legal? How can a country do that? What kind of a democracy has the ruling party choose a new president? When do the people get to have a say? Who knows?

~ Mail and Guardian:

New president
The ANC will on Monday nominate a new state president, treasurer general Mathews Phosa said.

“What we want to do tomorrow is announce a new state president and he or she will then announce a new Cabinet,” Phosa told a current affairs show on state television on Sunday, later clarifying that the party would announce a “nominee”.

Supporters of Mbeki may split from the ANC and contest elections as a breakaway party in 2009, the Sunday Times said.

The move threatens to shatter the foundations of the country’s post-apartheid political landscape, which has been dominated by the ANC since the end of white minority rule in 1994.

Either way I think there’s quite a bit of concern as to what is about to kick off. Could it be possible that Zuma gets automatically elected our president now? I don’t see why not. That will be one sure way to squash any trial and relieve him of any guilt in relation to him and his buddies’ corruption charges. I just hope one day people wake up and see him for the muppet that he is. President Dance A Lot!

I think these are going to be some trying times and I my only wish through all of this is that some sense gets injected for once and that people make decisions that are best for the country and not just for a small (?) handful of greedy power-hungry corrupters.

We cannot let South Africa throw everything away and join the rest of burning Africa. We have too much at stake. God help us all!

SA – Great News

Ok Ok, so far so good. I have figured that if I drive around without my head up my own ass or foot up someone else’s for being a prick, I see events and activities going on that are actually worth mentioning, and even more so, actually worth attending, and are therefore great news.

Yesterday afternoon while driving around I saw this fine piece of ass pasted on billboards in Midrand, on the highway, in Fourways and one or two others I can’t recall. I just had a fab image burned onto my retinas. Naturally it grabbed my attention so I will be so kind as to share: Sexpo at Gallagher Estate! Willie G?

SA Great News

I am sure to be attending this functions festivities. R100 at the gate from 11am and running until 9pm Thurs and Sun and midnight on Fri and Sat. Hell just click here to get all the details.

The news just gets better! Half price if you join the club. Also below are alternate venues and Johannesburg’s opening times. What more can I tell you? See you there!

I’m off to go and find some more SA Incredible News! NWR (News Worth Reporting). Good news does feel better than bad!

Wonderbra – Good News

Ok Ok. As I said earlier, as promised, I have been keeping my eyes peeled for some good news in South Africa. And this spot of good news, I was pleased to find even whilst dealing with the stresses of Johannesburg traffic! A great way to make men ME smile! I’m easily pleased. A company dedicated to the upliftment of, and safe handling of, South Africa’s best assets!

As seen on billboards while traveling down Witkoppen Road. Click for larger view. I did!

wonderbra sale

Oh, and its apparently good news for you ladies too. I have been told that in the white and yellow text directly to the left of those gorgeous breasts are details pertaining to some or other 25% sale happening sometime soon and some or other shop called Edgars. I wouldn’t know. I have yet to move my eyes to the left!

South Africa – The Good News

~ Update:- Amendment below 8)

It seems no matter where I am, I sure know how to track down the negative, and then bleat on about it in a typical Rant ‘n Rave. I can’t help it. I guess somehow I feel that bitching about stuff is actually going to help bring it to people’s attention and in some miraculous way, fix it. Or somehow I feel that ranting about it here will get it off my chest and perhaps make me feel better? Either way I’ve a better chance of falling pregnant!

However, it seems that even though I don’t spot it, there are actually some really good things going on in this place. There are some fantastic people doing some incredible things. I’m just sorry they are not stuck with me in traffic on the highway and sitting in restaurants experiencing terrible service! So, to take a page out of Don’s (from Jo’Blog fame) book, and also from S_20 (from commenting fame), I too will make mention of a site that has nothing but good things to say about this beloved country!

Take it away boys: South Africa – The Good News. Click on the link or click on the photo or if you really struggle with that simply go to: http://www.sagoodnews.co.za/

SA Good News

It’s just a pity good news doesn’t sell newspapers and people very rarely like to discuss happy thoughts. Death and destruction usually get a lot more airtime.

So does this mean I have turned over a new leaf and am now going to stop my bitching? Hell no! I will still write about stuff the way I see it and if it pisses me off then I will bitch about it. However I will try to write about positive situations too, if they jump out and grab my attention as negative stuff does.

Maybe you can help. Send me stories, ideas, photo’s etc etc that you would like me to post on your behalf. Try and prove me wrong. Convince me that there is more good than bad out there! HELP ME!! 8) Mail it all to OffTheHoox@Gmail.com

Service levels – DONT TIP!

I don’t know if it’s just Johannesburg or if the whole country has been hit by lethargic and subsequently abominable service levels. I’m talking about service across the board. Shops, movies, call centres, and the likes. The ones that it are your face blatantly these days are bars and restaurants.

You walk into a place and usually the staff greet you like they are doing you a favour by doing so. Then there’s the “couldn’t really give a toss where you sit” attitude. Once seated, the person who showed you to your table takes your drinks order and then says “I’m not actually your waitress but I’ll pass on the order”. Needless to say, more than a few times, the order comes to the table wrong. It goes downhill from there.

Of course this is a generalization. There are the few and far between places that you do get good service, enjoy some good banter with the staff, and you leave the place with a feel good attitude knowing that you will return. Like I say though, “few and far between”.

Take yesterday for example. I’m out in Midrand and a friend and I decided it would be good to catch a quick pizza and a drink at Primi Piatti. We were in a hurry so we asked the waiter before ordering if it would be ok to rush the food. Of course he says yes. We ordered a garlic bread starter to share and our individual mains explaining that since we are pressed for time he should just bring it all out together. 20 minutes later we get the garlic bread. Hmmmm. 10 minutes later the empty plate gets removed from the table. 30 minutes later (times flies when discussing aviation) I called the waiter over and asked what was taking a pizza and a salad so long to prepare. In all his (lack of) wisdom he declares proudly, “Oh here at Primi we only put the main course in the oven when you are done with your starter so that is remains fresh”. Thank you for reciting the company motto to me! So I very calmly and politely reply, “So what f**king part of “please bring it all out together cos we are in a hurry” did you fail to comprehend? If that was not possible why didn’t you f**king say so when you took the order? We finished the starters 30 minutes ago! We have now been here an hour and have not yet got our food on the table!”

Maybe they were busy so I took a quick scan around the establishment. Nope, we were still the ONLY table in the place. I guess everyone else has figured out how sh!t they are and are not bothering returning for another stress. I certainly wont. We eventually got the food but now it was late, we were out of time, so we threw a bit down our throats and I packed my remains to go. I can’t even tell you if it tasted good or not as by then I had no appetite and I was in a foul mood. Needless to say his tip was not great. R200 bill. R4 tip! He did bring me one drink without a hassle so he got what he deserved!

That was just one example. Go to a pub, any pub, like The Keg or O’Hagens or whatever and see the service for what it is. Ridiculous! Staff just don’t give a rats ass about their customers. When comparing just cast your mind back a few years when you had people in those jobs who cared about what they were doing. I remember how lively the staff in the Spur used to be. Almost fighting other staff to get your food out the best so they would get a good tip. Now a days, you have to scream at any staff member walking past with their fingers in their noses.

I heard a rumour the other day which could possibly explain this. I heard that waiting staff is now considered a professional job so they are all paid salaries and no longer rely on tips. I don’t know how true this is but it makes sense when you go to a bar and get served by 5 different staff members and each one of them screws your order up. There really is NO incentive to get anything right and make your stay in the place a pleasant one. But if this is the case then we shouldn’t be expected to tip anymore? Right? Why should we? I did a job, earned a salary and I didn’t get a tip on completion whether I screwed it up or not.

Tipping in this country is a given, an expected part of your bill. I say to hell with that. Let’s get back to what it was in the first place, a GRATUITY, a bonus for doing a great job. “Keep up the good work”. Now you are paying exorbitant prices when going out, getting sh!t service, and still tipping on top of that? Why should the staff care? It’s not their bar, they are still getting a salary and idiots like us are still tipping. No more!

I also feel that the responsibility lies with the managers. They are responsible for the staff. So MANAGE your staff you lazy bastards! Either they are hiring the wrong people for the job, are not training their people properly, or just don’t care anymore. The only time you get good service is when you go to the places where the owners are there and interacting with everyone. They are very quick to put their staff in line with a swift kick to the attitude!

From here on I will only tip for service that deserves a tip. The only way service levels are going to improve is if you hit these lazy bastards where it hurts. In their wallets! Now I can go through life here and just be the only tight ass refusing to give a tip, or the rest of the country can join in and make something change.

On the other hand, we could all just become as lethargic and as pathetic as the service industry. Since we are fast joining the rest of Africa, why should we bother? Isn’t it all about racism, corruption and crime anyway?

Good luck South Africa!

A bad day for assumption!

His request approved, the Fox News photographer quickly used a cell phone to call the local airport to charter a flight. He was told a twin engine plane would be waiting for him at the airport.

Baron

Arriving at the airfield, he spotted a plane warming up outside a hanger. He jumped in with his bag, slammed the door shut, and shouted,  ”Let’s go.”

The pilot taxied out, swung the plane into the wind and took off. Once in the air, the photographer instructed the pilot, ”Fly over the valley and make low passes so I can take pictures of the fires on the hillsides.”

”Why?” asked the pilot.

”Because I’m a photographer for Fox Cable News,” he responded.  ”And I need to get some close up shots.”

The pilot was strangely silent for a moment, finally he stammered,  ”So, what you’re telling me, is … you’re NOT my flight instructor?”

A new week, a new start!

This weekend gone was pretty hectic. I’m not entirely sure if I mentioned it before but I was living in two places split according to days of the week.

Mon to Fri I was living in a little place in Midrand right next to Grand Central Airport where I was doing all my ground school studies due to convenience and lack of traffic issues. Sat and Sun I was staying at my mate G in Randpark Ridge.

Now that school is over there is no longer any point to stay out there so this weekend I moved everything back to my mate which is where I am now. Not only is it a much nicer, more homely place, it is also very kewl to be staying back with a great mate. Someone to talk shit with and have a laugh and joke! I’m gonna miss him when I leave for Port Elizabeth.

We also went to visit the most spectacular aircraft I have ever had the fortune of sitting in. The Cessna Citation CJ3. I know the pilot personally and since Rocky (who is also an enthusiast) was in town I called the pilot up and asked if he wouldn’t mind a bit of a show. He happily obliged! So Rocky, G and I rushed over on Saturday. Oh my God, what an incredible machine! Besides the obvious amazing beauty and other spectacular brilliance, it also has an operational ceiling (max height) of 45000ft where most large airlines struggle to climb over 35000ft. That’s just massive KEWL factor! Cheers A.T!

Take a look and see what I mean! Gives me goosebumps!

This week now is all about studying. I might leave the house to go get some milk and bread (by that I mean pig out on takeaways) but besides that my head will be stuck in the books. Feel free to pop in and distract me with a comment or a phone call (if you have the number since I’m not about to advertise it). You can also make use of the new MAIL ME button which some of you have already started doing. Thank’s for the funnies and even bigger thanks for the photos! You know the ones I’m talking about! 8) Some I can’t put up for obvious reasons but the others I will try and build into something as soon as I get a chance! Either way keep it/them coming!

Now to open the book and hmmmm ZZZZZZzzzzzzzz

School is over!

I cannot tell you how relieved I feel right now that school is finally over. Yes this opens up the next challenge of studying and writing exams but at least this first hurdle is over. Tonight there are going to be more than just a few beers!

2 months down, +- 12 to go!

Sometime between the 4th and 11th of October I will be moving to Port Elizabeth. The kewlest city in South Africa.

Port Elizabeth

Once I get there and I am all settled in, I will make the final decision as to which flying school I will complete all my training with. It’s pretty much down to two but there are some serious considerations that have to be looked at.

But that is next month’s problem. Tonight we drink! Have a great weekend!
