I was talking to a good friend of mine, Shanz, recently and we got onto the inevitable aviation discussion, “The Mile High Club”
For those who don’t know, all one of you, the Mile High Club is quite simply an unofficial “club” of people who have had sex at an altitude of above 1 Mile.
So I got to thinking. Could this be possible on the ground? After doing a bit of maths I thought it may just very well be possible. Allow me to explain.
1 Mile = 6080 feet
Johannesburg = 5994 feet
Carton Centre = 203 meters / 665 feet
Therefore : The top of Carton Centre is approx. 6659 feet AMSL (Above Mean Sea Level) which by far outdoes the minimum 6080 feet requirement. I think you can see where I’m heading with this.
So, the only questions I have now are, “Does the Mile High Club count at +1 Mile AMSL or does it have to be + 1 Mile AGL (Above Ground Level)”, “Does a shag on the 52nd storey of Carlton guarantee entry into this world famous and specialized club?”
I think I know where the outcome will lie but it’s worth a shot. Sorry for you earthlings!

Personally - i think it should have to be done in an aircraft in flight…..
Shanz - Ok. I have been asking around and I think that is the general consensus. Mile High must definitely be airborne! Come on ladies!

And just in case it was a serious questions, I did a quick bit of research back into Wiki: “The first member of the mile high club is considered the pilot and design engineer Lawrence Sperry, who allegedly received his “membership” when he tested the self-constructed autopilot and had sex with Mrs. Waldo Polk during a flight on a Curtiss Flying Boat to New York in in November 1916″
WG - I guess it is a pilot thing. We fly in nautical miles and therefore the mile high club is based on nautical miles. Quotes from Wiki: “There are 5,280 feet in a statute mile or approximately 6,076 feet in a nautical mile”. “While historically the nautical mile was defined as a minute of arc along a meridian of the Earth, the International Extraordinary Hydrographic Conference held in Monaco in 1929 adopted what is now the universally accepted definition of a nautical mile as “1852 metres exactly.” (6076.1155 feet)”. What a nice offer Willie. I see you are still the overly generous man I knew so many years ago!
Who was founder of the mile high club? Was it a woman who started this thing? I didn’t ask who was the first member , Lost connection you should wake up! (lol) I google alot a site and what I read was a Melissa Akins started the mile high and just wanted to know if this was true
Lonnie - Exactly what I wrote if you read carefully, the only reference to the starting of the Mile High Club was Lawrence Sperry and Mrs. Waldo Polk (we are not here to criticize their adulterous behavior). Since there is no real club as such I feel the person who started it is also the first unofficial member thus also being the founder member who again were Lawrence Sperry and Mrs. Waldo Polk. I’m sure not how much clearer I can make it? I’m not entirely sure how you use Google or how you interpret the results but the only reference I can find to Melissa Akins is the following and I don’t even want to know what you were thinking when you saw this:
