A birthday weekend

01 Jun

Today (1 July Oops – 1 June) is G’s birthday, just to add to all the activity of the past few days. Happy birthday for the 107th time mate!

After finishing the running around yesterday afternoon, I stopped at the shops to buy some essentials like shampoo and wine. Yes wine is now considered an essential! Thanks to AH’s (aka pops) recommendation, I picked up 2 x 2liter boxes of Woolworths’ red. Don’t diss it till you have tried it! It’s a Simonsvlei cabernet sauvignon / merlot blend and well worth every cent of the R54 per box. That works out to about R18 per bottle which for all you international people equates to about $2.25 per bottle for a really nice wine. Yummy!

A few glasses on the couch took the edge off substantially. I chilled for a few hours and then it was time to get cracking again. G’s birthday dinner was at an awesome restaurant out in the bush called the Observation Restaurant (I think?). It’s an incredible place situated inside a game reserve (mind the Rhinos and Zebras on the way in) with a huge telescope that you get to view all sorts off good stuff during dinner between courses. My favourite was seeing Saturn and its rings as clear as day. Incredible. The food was great and the wine (all 2 bottles that I had) was even greater. It was so kewl to see old mates that I hadn’t seen in so many years and catch up with them.

Fending off a blistering hangover this morning, we managed to head out to a coffee shop for some tea and a muffins. I was quite impressed that I managed to keep it down. I was feeling awful. No rest though for the wicked. Directly after breakfast we drove out to Hartebeesport Dam north of Johannesburg for G’s birthday lunch with the family. Things started to pick up after the Grandpa Headache Powder and the Rennies kicked in. We were ready for the next round.

I am sitting at home now feeling like a stuffed pig after eating some of the best lamb and pork on a spit. Although the service was a bit crappy, it never deterred us from having a great afternoon out.

I had a lovely call from Deeds this evening to catch up and to talk about our upcoming Thailand trip. It is going to be so much fun! I cant wait. 7 days and counting! Even the passport is giggling excitingly. It is finally being used for some fun and games!

I think I am quite happy that the weekend is finally over. Since I am no longer employed I get to chill tomorrow morning. Suffer suckers!! My week goes crazy again from about Tuesday afternoon onwards.

Off for another glass of cheap SA dooswyn (box wine). Hic. Goodnight
