Atlanta or bust

This weekend past I was supposed to be in Atlanta for my mate Snappy’s birthday and Snappy and Lexi’s housewarming party. Everything was set. It was Atlanta or bust. Turned out Atlanta WAS bust! I guess it just wasn’t meant to be!

For a whole string of reasons, including missing a flight, Spring Break and ridiculously full flights, I never made it to Atlanta. Something was trying to tell me that I shouldn’t be travelling this weekend. The most annoying time was actually sitting on the plane and then being asked to get off cos they had called a complete no-fly into the Atlanta area. Why? Here’s why!

I was so angry I can’t even begin to explain. I was actually shaking when I eventually left the airport. I had to walk away before I got myself arrested. I threw myself in a cab and had one of the best drivers ever. We had such a nice chat on the way back to the hotel and he made me feel so much better about it all. After I explained the compilation of cock-ups that had occurred over the past two days he said, “Sometimes you have a little voice giving you messages. Buddy, this is a loud hailer! You should not be travelling this weekend.” He then went on to explain what I could do on Sunday now that I was stuck in Houston. It included Nasa which was a great plan!

I got back to the hotel, smashed (not literally) a bottle of wine and went to sleep early to forget about the day.

For a Passport Thrasher I am not doing very well. Just goes to show, bad luck can happen to anyone when dealing with travel and the travel industry! Oh and weather!

Born to ride

I’m looking for boots. Not just any kind of boots. Harley Davidson boots. Why? Why not!

Anyway. We drove around last night in search of these boots. First stop, where else? The Harley Davidson Store in Stafford, Texas. That’s where the fun and games began.

God I haven’t laughed that much in such a long time!

Consider the bullet bit

I am in Texas. The word is “bit” not “bitten”! Trust me, I’m fixin ta speak Ameeerican y’all.

Anyway, back to the bullet. I am now officially an iSlut. I took the leap yesterday and went off to buy an iPhone. Yes they are still locked to AT&T but I also made friends with another guy in the mall recently that will unlock the phone for a nominal fee. I felt really guilty for a little while but after about 7 or 8 seconds, the feeling passed. It might have been an indigestion bubble too.

iPhone

Anyway, today at lunchtime, I go and collect my iPhone and join the masses. Yes, I am excited. It’s like Christmas only without the surprise. I am a gizmo sheep and I don’t care who knows it!

Out ‘n About

Last night was my first real night out and as pleasant as it was, I couldn’t have been much company. I was amped to go out. Plans were made around 2pm when I was still wide awake. It was never going to be a big night but it was a great idea cos I was eventually going to meet someone I have known for years, jUUles, hwo has commented from time to time.

Further plans were made to go and try find an iPhone for me. The Apple Stores in the area have all sold out of the 16GB model so we ended up going to an AT&T store which I had phoned earlier to confirm their stocks. Now is when they mentioned that I have to take out a contract with them and run multiple credit checks. All information that would have been useful on the phone a few hours before. F*ck ‘em. We walked out.

Dinner was really nice. Cajun food where I was offered frogs legs, ‘gator and an introduction rundown of the history of Cajun food. Very interesting but I declined the funky food and opted for some really good calamari and a JUMBO Gumbo. Way too big but really nice! Some kickass garlic bread too!

JUUles and I kind of worked together in Iraq although not at the same time but we knew all the same people and camps and situations so it was really good to have a laugh and “catchup”. I was having such a good time and then suddenly, without warning, the jetlag brick wall slammed in like a sledgehammer. Wham… and I was useless. I was suddenly so tired. I kept up as much as possible in the conversation but eventually had to throw in the towel and bail on the evening.

I wasn’t in my room for more thn 5 minutes before slipping into a coma until 5:30 this morning when my pesky alarm started screeching in my ear.

Thanks jUUles! We will definitely do this again! All except the AT&T store. Assholes! X

Titillating Tuesday – Rodeo

Save a horse, ride a cowgirl.

It’s rodeo time in Houston. There is so much going on. Check it out: http://www.hlsr.com/

I have already visited once and I’m sure there will be many more visits while I’m in town! I went to a boot store and this cowboy showed me some boots, none of which cost less than $1 000. I mean, they were nice boots I guess as cowboy boots go but $1 000? Then he showed me a pair that cost $12 000. WHAT?

My first day of big school

It was 2:30am when I opened my peepers and that was that. My body had decided that it had slept enough and it was time to get up. This is because my body thought it was already 9:30am due to the 7 hour time difference. Jetlag is real and can be a bitch.

moom_exhausted01

These 4 hours before I had to leave for work gave me time to get ready, get my clothes sorted out, make sure I had all the correct papers and books and notes that I needed, and check my emails. It was only when I had checked things about 4 times over did I realise that I was in fact just a little nervous about today. And looking back it was quite a day. Today was the day that I was really officially part of the planning team and introduced to all the senior management and other team members that I am going to be working with, eating, drinking and living with over the next few years. It went well.

Everything kind of went according to plan except for requiring passport photos for my work visa and the downpour that appeared from nowhere when I stepped outside to go get them. I was nice however to know some of the people in the office and that made for an easy entrance. This is going to be an exciting project and extremely challenging. There is just so much going on now. I was invited out for drinks tonight but I had to respectfully decline (rain-check) as I feel like my eyeballs are going to explode. I am so tired.

It’s 7pm now and that means I have been awake for way too many hours already. I am going to try and stay awake as long as possible and hopefully crack this stupid sleeping pattern my body has adopted. I do think Houston is going to be fun.

Facebook Revelations

Every once in a while you have things in your life that give you a little clue as to who you want in your life and who you don’t. Or who wants you in their life or not! Sometimes it is a LOT clearer than just a little clue but instead shows bright as day! Who would have thought Facebook could have been one of things? Well as it turns out it is quite common place these days.

It’s quite silly really, who is friends with who on Facebook and for what reasons. And then, should one really care if one day you find you have one friend less?

 facebook remove

No, one really shouldn’t. Even though in life sometimes simple actions like this simple click to remove someone are definitely inevitable, I guess what hurts the most is the knowledge of the conscience decision made to take that step. It’s kind of final. So be it. Decision made! And it does hurt like a bitch! WHY?

Facebook
(CLICK TO REMOVE)

To hell with it. Rather focus on real people who make a positive difference in your life. And really when you look at the bigger picture and see what people can do in reality knowing full well how you feel but go ahead anyway,…. oh fuck it! Whatever.

Goodbye old friends.

Time Change

I got myself all confused with all the different times zones I have been jumping between. The laptop I am using at the moment is my personal MacBook until I get my company issued IBM. I don’t like the way a lot of stuff is laid out and I can’t use Windows Live Writer in Mac OSX, so I still load Windows XP over Mac OSX using Parallels Desktop. The only reason I mention this is because an extra operating system means an extra time zone setting.

normal_time_zones

I had 5 times to worry about:

Angola, Africa
Texas, USA
Mac OSX
Windows XP
WordPress (my blog host)

In addition to all that to take care of,  daylight savings has just kicked in today in the USA.

So what I have done now is reset everything to one single zone. I am now on Houston time and will be for the duration of my stay. I tried to stay in the UTC (GMT) zone but it just got too confusing for me. The only difference you should see is when I post something about “today” is it may already be “tomorrow” for you.

It will be set back when I return to Africa!

Travel Trials and Tribulations

Why did I think that my travels would get any easier? In fact it went completely the other way. I really have had loads of shitty luck when it came to getting on flights.

I could just leave it at that but that would be completely out of character and just not Hoox.

The only consolation to the whole fiasco is that I am now writing this from a fully reclining seat in business class on Air France flight 038. I eventually made it so there is a happy ending

Amy Belle – What a star!

What an incredible story this is.

Amy Belle, was discovered busking on the streets of Glasgow by a friend of Rod Stewart and really soon afterwards was performing with Rod on stage at a “One Night Only” show at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Simply incredible. For those not familiar with U.K. terminology, Busking is the practice of doing live performances in public places to entertain people

I absolutely love this video and have watched it countless times. It gives me goosebumps. Watch this and just try to imagine how her nerves must have felt. God I love this. Amazing sax too! Awesome!

You can check her out on MySpace.
