This is going to be an experience of a lifetime. So far it has been pretty overwhelming and it doesn’t show signs of stopping. Just the magnitude of what we are going to be doing out here is incredible.
The last few days have been a spin. I’m still dizzy.
Saturday night turned out to be a complete no show. We didn’t do anything besides have dinner together in the hotel and call it an early night. I am actually quite grateful for that cos I didn’t realise how tired I really was. I hit the sack and slipped into a coma for the next 12 hours.
I’m not entirely sure what time it was when I resurfaced but I know it wasn’t before lunch. I think it was just my stomach that was calling which woke me up. I threw on some shorts and slip slips and wandered downstairs to see what was going on and who was doing it. Some people were around. We went for some lunch which was great.
The afternoon was taken care of with a stroll down the main road (esplanade) down to a pizza joint that others had frequented recently. There was a bunch of guys on large offroad motorcycles and 4-wheelers carrying on much better up and down the road. Wheel spinning, wheelie, sliding all over. It was great entertainment although a bit nerve wracking at first. We eventually arrived at the pizza place. We just had beer. I was very excited when I saw Castle Lager in the fridge. I ordered 2 convincing my companion that it was the best beer (lager) in the world. It was disgusting. I cannot believe Castle would allow that piss to be sold with their label. We quickly switched back to the local beer Cuca which is quite nice and VERY cheap! A great combination. We left a little late so returned slightly after dark…
Yesterday was a very early start. 3:30am up and 4:00am downstairs with the driver on the way to the airport. I had to go to our site up north where I am going to be living for the next 4 years. All I can say is WOW. I really have my work cut out for me. I know I don’t completely comprehend everything there is to comprehend but from where I am standing now, the word for it is mon-u-frikkin-mental. Mental being the operative word there. I’m afraid I can’t talk number or details but it’s larger than the calculator on my little Nokia 1100 phone can work out. It’s big and I’m a part of it. It’s also beautiful!
You cannot beat an African sunset!
Today was a long wait in the African sun for my return flight. Talk about relative humidity. And by that I am NOT referring to the sweat that accumulates around your genitals while shagging a cousin. I’m talking about the very draining heat and discomfort index that the humidity brings on in the rainy season. Oh and speaking of moisture and rainy season, I have been nailed by mosquitos so even now there is a chance that my weight-loss program is a short 10 days away.
Back in Luanda today and not too soon I must say. So much to do and such a short space of time to do it in. I may be on a flight on Thursday morning now heading to Houston via Lisbon, overnighting in Paris and landing sometime on Friday afternoon. This of course only if I don’t make it on the Houston Express which I am waitlisted on. I will call in the morning and get them to confirm my seat. I want that seat. I will have that seat! That is a direct flight Luanda to Houston. So much better! Universe… I WILL BE ON THAT PLANE! Make it happen!
I’m tired. I’m hungry. I’m out!
