The Saturday morning staff meeting has been canceled. This is some of the best news I have heard all week. I know it sounds quite bad when a canceled meeting makes a highlight of the week but you have to appreciate, I have had one hell of a week. Loads of midnight and beyond issues, crisis after crisis, and what with being messed about with my replacement, even the little things count.
Plans for the weekend are simple. Do nothing!
- Finish work this afternoon
- Open a bottle of wine
- Read a book / watch a movie
- Finish the bottle of wine
- Sleep
- Wake up on Monday
Now THAT’S what I call a well thought out plan. I don’t even care to wake up for food. It really isn’t worth getting out of bed for.
Now for once, PLEASE, do this one favour…. Tell me what you are up to this weekend. I know there are enough lurkers out there. Don’t be shy. Drop me a line. Make a comment. Tell us where you are and what you are up to.
COME ON!
Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, make it a good one. Catch you on Monday!
Adios

You insisted, so here goes.
Durbs is 32 C right now (even in Kloof, God knows what it is in town) hardly any clouds and the Proteas and Windies are sweating it out in Kingsmead in 3rd test (we winning of course). Yer Mom is studying the insides of her eyelids in the airconditioned main bedroom, and guess what I’m doing (heheheh)
Little story which will remind you that you could be worse off. You could still be in shipping !! Last weekend Pier 1 terminal gantry dropped a 30 ton container ontop of our reefer container of lemons (in the hold) from 23 feet up. Goodbye, reefer container. So we discharge it, take it at GREAT expense to the citrus terminal, argue for two days with the fiends from hell at the Dept of Agriculture as its foreign fruit in RSA, unpack and repack the whole damn thing into ANOTHER 40′ highcube reefer, and get it out to Pier 1 yesterday, just in time for loading on our loading ship today. I was informed two hours ago that the goddam terminal forgot to plug the NEW reefer in. So, for over 24 hours, our 24,600 kgs of prime Argentinian lemons, supposed to be at plus 6 C, is probably around 40C, and 24,600 kgs of prime Argentinian lemons are either rather jaded lemon juice or plain scrap. Which is why I am NOT in the A/c in main bedroom, but burning up the cellphone, telling everyone I can think of what idots they are !!
So enjoy Albania while you can mate ! You could be in shipping…….
AH - HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
No thanks. You can keep shipping, 32C, and 40C lemons. I saw enough shit in shipping between the hours of midnight at 0600 to see me a lifetime! Prabu Jivesh? Enough said. Good luck with your lemons and your lemon heads that you are dealing with. Who said you need to plug a fridge in to make it work???
Although it could be worse, I could be in Albania forever.
Shaddup with your Prabu Jivesh !!
For those reading, that was a ship on charter to my employers, where this little jumped-up, wet-behind-the-ears wharfrat called Hoox, who then worked for an opposition agency, made a complete a$$ of his old man because he thought of something that I’d completely forgotten, which made HIM right and me totally wrong ! And you think he’ll let me forget it? NEVAAAAAAAAAH
Ok, just in case anyone IS actually still reading this, my point of Prabu Jivesh is a simple one but one of magnitude casting my mind back to that of a wet-behind-the-ears 20 year old wharf-rat in the cross-hairs of the shipping community. Just for the record, what AH doesn’t know about shipping in South Africa, or the rest of the world for that matter, probably isn’t worth knowing and entering the industry was a daunting task to say the least with impossible shoes to fill. All I can say is it felt damn good to have the unique opportunity to go up head to head with the best and have both us walk away unscathed and a bloody good story that we still laugh about today. Good memeories. That’s what it’s all about! By God I learnt a lot that week. And not just about shipping. Thank you pops!
Yah, boring boring….
But to close, something that that incident taught me, loud and clear. ALWAYS listen, even to those who have no right, nor likelihood, of knowing anything. As the Desiderata says, “they too have their story”. Thank you for teaching ME that.
And by the way, now maybe you can learn something. You told me I couldn’t download YouTube. I finally found a way, purely by chance, of downloading clips from YouTube, as I told you I would, sooner or later, and dl’ed Desiderata. Used RealPlayer 11 Beta. It works. Until Youtube owners find out I spose.
Mmm, weekend’s almost over… I did as little as possible.
And I had a few friends help me out just in case that got too strenuous. It didn’t, but at least the company was good.
So what the are you reading anyway?
Lou - Ok I lied. In fact I am completely illiterate. I watched movies all weekend. Much less effort.
