15 Days

I have only 15 days left in Albania. I cannot really believe it. I am feeling quite strange at the moment. It is almost surreal. I really thought I would be over the moon in the last couple of weeks of me being here. My departure has been a long standing battle and now that I have won I have mixed feelings.

I packed it in early last night so that I could get ahead of the game with my packing. Closed up the office and went to my little room, put my laptop on my desk and changed into comfortable clothes. I sat down on my bed to think where I should start this packing process. I never got back up. I found myself sitting on my bed and staring around my room that has become my little hideaway from life for the past 9 months.

I have a BabyBel (link 1) wall. This is basically a section of wall that I used to throw BabyBel (link 2) wax at and it became quite the collection. (BabyBel cheese comes wrapped in red wax that you can squish up and then roll into sticky balls that will adhere to almost anything if you throw them hard enough). That wall represents some very funny, happy, drunk and crazy nights. It also represents some very lonely, angry, sober and sad nights. I decided last night that I could not take it down. My wax balls will stay on the wall forever. I don’t care if the next guy takes them down because in my mind the last image of that wall will be my own. BabyBel Rules!

Titillating Tuesday – Red Wine

I am very rapidly becoming a firm believer in red wine being the answer to all things negative. Does this mean I am an alcoholic? Hell no! Alcoholics go to meetings! There is nothing quite like extracting yourself from reality for a while, go to your quiet place, cut up some nice cheese (Edam in my case) and open a good bottle of Montenegron Vranac. Then find the largest glass ever created, fill it, empty it, fill it again and sip through it while watching some relatively uninspiring movie that doesn’t require too much concentration. Repeat the above steps until a/ You run out of wine or b/ You pass out. I can’t recall which one I did.

Yesterday was a bit of a nightmare. Today is much better.

UB40 said it best:

Red red wine, you make me feel so fine
You keep me rockin’ all of the time
Red red wine, you make me feel so grand
I feel a million dollar when you’re just in my hand
Red red wine, you make me feel so sad
Any time I see you go, it make me feel bad
Red red wine, you make me feel so fine
Monkey back and ease up on the sweet deadline

Mondays

(Click to play)

Bob Geldof wrote the song after reading a telex report on the shooting spree of 16-year-old Brenda Ann Spencer, who fired at children playing in a school playground across the street from her home in San Diego, California. She killed two adults and injured eight children and one police officer. Spencer showed no remorse for her crime, and her explanation for her actions was “I don’t like Mondays”

I know how she felt!

I had a very good weekend. Good food, good people and a very slow start to a very relaxing Sunday. I even had a pretty good and uneventful drive back up to the camp.

Today even started off great. Woke up nicely. Showered. Dressed. Started packing a few things (perhaps a little eager I know). Then I got a call from the boss. “Why can I not get on the internet?” Let’s just say that started the wheels in motion for a pretty strained morning. I really don’t feel like dealing with anything else right now. People, please back off.

It’s 11:30am and I am still in hope that today is going to get better again and not set the tone for the week ahead. I’m holding my breath.

Google Searches

While I’m in the staff meeting you can go browsing the internet. It’s amazing the wealth of information and fascinating facts there are out there. The internet bridges worlds and makes millions of otherwise impossible things possible every day.

Thanks to Google, everything is at our fingertips!

Inundated

Thank you for the few concerned emails. I am around and I am still writing. It’s just my time and “creative genius” (tongue in cheek) have been compromised lately by the sheer amount of work I have to do. It’s handover time and for all of you out there that have ever had to do a handover you will know what I mean and you will know what I am going through right now. Wake up 5:30am. In the office at 6:15am (one of the perks of living in a camp 20 meters from your desk). Leave the office at 10:00pm.

Above and beyond your normal day to day activities, you now also have to document every activity you have ever done, every paper you have ever signed, every deal you ever brokered and worst of all, answer the multitude of questions from the new guy.

The clients don’t care. Sure, let me drop everything and work on YOUR shit

It kinda feels like this:

paperwork

Which if you know me at all, you will know that this is completely impossible since I am in I.T. and we don’t have even close to that amount of actual physical paperwork. The thing is, this wouldn’t really have the same effect I need for you to feel sorry for me now would it?:

laptop

But the good news through all of this is that I actually have the opportunity to have a handover. That means that my departure is just around the corner. It kind of makes it easier thinking that at least it is the means to that final end and goal achieved. Grin and bare it for the next couple of weeks. It’s almost over.

I have to smile though. I look back on every other job or project I have joined and I cannot recall one single time I have EVER received a handover. “Hoox, go jump in the fire, sort the unknown problems out and let us know if you need help. We’ll be down at the local pub”. I guess that shows a bit of faith?

Sorry, got to dash. Virtual paperwork calls! Can someone please get me a cup of tea?

Another tragedy

It is a very sad day indeed on the project today as we say goodbye to another one of our close friends who was taken tragically in a motor vehicle accident on the mountain road last night. The details are not clear yet as to precisely what happened. 2 other passengers in the vehicle survived and are in hospital in Tirana.

This unfortunately lays testament to the dangers of this extremely hazardous environment in which we live. Saying these roads are dangerous is not simple small talk.

I really hope that everyone can take a lesson away from this and just be that little extra careful (in some cases a LOT extra) when driving and especially when driving with others in the vehicle who’s lives you are responsible for.

Out of privacy and respect I will not mention his name but for those who knew him, it is a very sad day. A sad day for us all. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of all of them.

Titillating Tuesday – Stress

My God it has been an awful start to the week. From such a good week last week and a really nice weekend to a day like yesterday. I really thought I was going to blow a vein in my forehead a few times yesterday. Today seems better. So far so good. I have the answer to some problems which is making life a little easier. Only work answers though unfortunately. It’s better than no answers.

Nothing like a good old Titillating Tuesday to make things all better.

I’m Dirty Tree

I was hatched on this 17th day of January in the year of our Lord 1975 which makes me a humble dirty tree (Irish – 33).

In 4 months time that will make me a Dirty Tree and a Turd.

 Dirty Tree

So what can I say about this incredible day? Not a lot really. I don’t remember a damn thing. I know it was a Friday so that must have been kewl. At least mom could have been home for the weekend. You see, I was even considerate way back then.

Let’s take a walk around the tinterweb with my great mate Google:

According to astrology:

image 2008 will be a Number One year for you. Ruled by the Sun. This is a year of action. The seeds you plant now, you will reap later. Others might find you less sociable, as you are busier than ever and you focus on your activities and your needs. Still, you are outgoing and your initiative is stronger than ever. Advice – Stand alone, take action, start fresh, express independence.

Famous people lucky enough to have shared my day:

January 17, 1863 – David Lloyd George – Prime Minister
January 17, 1899 – Al Capone – Gangster
January 17, 1933 – Shari Lewis – Puppeteer
January 17, 1931 – James Earl Jones – Actor
January 17, 1942 – Muhammad Ali – Boxer
January 17, 1944 – Joe Frazier – Boxer
January 17, 1949 – Andy Kaufman – Comedian
January 17, 1927 – Tom Dooley – Humanitarian

Nice. A couple of boxers and a gangster. Maybe that’s what makes me a fighter? But I am certainly honoured to share my birthday with James Earl Jones. “Luke, I am your father!”

According to history:

http://www.brainyhistory.com/days/january_17.html

My God. There has been a lot of death and misery on January 17 in history. 1995 – 7.2 earthquake destroys Kobe Japan killing 5,372 die, 1991 – Operation Desert Storm begins U.S. led allies vs Iraq, 1989 – Gunman opens fire in California schoolyard; 5 students slain, 30 wounded.

There are of course some good things too. 1993 – Russian Irina Privalova cycles world record 300m indoor (35.45″), 1976 – “I Write the Songs” by Barry Manilow hits #1, 1976 – Hermes rocket launched by European Space Agency, 1963 – Joe Walker takes X-15 to altitude of 82 km

According to reality:

I am stuck in the Happy Valley’s Reps Camp for my birthday. That’s ok really because I don’t really go big on my birthday anyway. I will share a few bottles of good red wine with some good friends and pass out early. Sounds like a plan!

Happy Birthday Hoox

Thank you Hoox
