A great day back in ’94 – A sad day today.

The world was shocked and awed by the incredible unity that was displayed on the most incredible day in South African history back on 10th May 1994. The day Nelson Mandela became the first black president of a free and democratic South Africa. The world braced for the unknown. South Africans braced for the worst. Elections were uncertain. I remember the day well. I was with a great bunch of fellow South Africans at South Africa House in Trafalgar Square, London. A lot of people around the world were expecting some form of violent outbreak spurred on by the strong believers in the old white rule. When the day finally came, the headlines read: “Peace breaks out in South Africa”. An inspiring day to be proud of for everyone! The world embraced.

This song “Neva Again” by “Prophets of Do City” features on a double CD pack (Winds Of Change) that Maude, the lovely mother of the lovely KT, got for me to remind me of my home.

“Excellent, finally a black president”

Listening to it does conjure up hope, for some I guess. I for one can look back and see so many of the changes that have blessed South Africa. Take the crime out of the equation for a second as difficult as it is to do, and look around and see the marvel that is South Africa. The freedom! The technology! The most beautiful country on earth.

~~~
How deeply saddened however I am today though 13 years later when someone like Jacob Zuma can me made president of the ANC (party in power) and strategically lined to be the next ruling president of this amazing nation. A “man” that has faced rape charges and got off after making a statement during his case along the lines of “she was wearing a short skirt so she deserved it”. Most people would see that as guilty as charged but not him and not our judicial system. Our deputy president gets off scott-free! Not only so, but he gets backed by the ANC Woman’s League??? What the fuck are these people thinking?
He also got off allegations and charges of fraud and corruption after selling his financial advisor and right hand man down the river and to jail. This man cannot be trusted!
Wikipedia sums it up nicely. Check out the references to his AIDS policy and the amazing effectiveness of the common shower. This man is going to be our LEADER? God help South Africa:
The fraud and corruption:
Zuma became involved in a controversy after his financial advisor, Schabir Shaik, was convicted of corruption and fraud, leading to his dismissal as deputy president in June 2005. Although Zuma was formally charged with corruption soon afterwards, the case was struck from the roll after the prosecution’s application for a postponement was dismissed.
The Rape:
In December 2005, he was also charged in the Johannesburg High Court with rape. The accuser, the young daughter of a deceased friend of Zuma’s from during the years of the struggle against apartheid, was known by Zuma to be HIV positive. On May 8, 2006, the Court dismissed the charges, agreeing that the sexual act in question was consensual. During the trial, Zuma admitted to having unprotected sex with his accuser but claimed that he took a shower afterwards to cut the risk of contracting HIV. This statement has been condemned by the judge, health experts, AIDS activists as well as ridiculed by the public in general.
Chaos on way as ANC hands Zuma top job, an article that depicts it quite well clearly explaining the shortfalls of this man’s integrity and leadership abilities. A sad day for South Africans and for South African politics.
Some excerpts from the column:
  • JACOB Zuma, a controversial populist and polygamist with threats of prosecution for fraud and corruption hanging over his head, was last night elected leader of South Africa’s ruling African National Congress.
  • But the intervening 15 months are certain to be the most tumultuous and precarious in South Africa since Nelson Mandela was sworn in on 10 May 1994.
  • His victory means there are now two competing centres of supremacy in the country, with Mr Mbeki serving out the rest of his term as a lame duck head of state while 65-year-old Mr Zuma controls the ruling party. It is unclear how the two can be reconciled since the mutual hatred is deep. Mr Mbeki is broadly committed to a free market economy while Mr Zuma has relied opportunistically on the support of the communist and trade union wings of the broad ANC alliance to secure his rise to power.
  • The differences are so stark and toxic that some commentators believe it is entirely possible that the 105-year-old movement will split between factions in the next few months.
  • A decision must be made within the first two months of 2008 on whether to press charges of racketeering, tax evasion, fraud and corruption against Mr Zuma.
  • The danger is that South Africa, long acclaimed as the continent’s beacon of hope, will become just another banana republic in which corruption is entrenched. Any hint of interference by Mr Zuma with the due process of the law would make his government a pariah.
  • But the rand has already suffered a mini-collapse, seen as a warning by the international financial community, and South Africans will be looking nervously at what happens to the currency today now that Mr Zuma heads the ruling party.
Cyanide and Happiness #15 – New rules
Screw this woman’s lib stuff. You want equality? Have equality! You can open the door for us sometimes! You can pay for dinner every once in a while. You can pull our chair out for us every now and then. You go get the drinks at a party and let us be served first at a bar for a change.
Fine, we will bare the children!
Project songs
We were sitting enjoying a thrilling party the other night and during our drunkenness (my God that is a word?) we came up with some fitting songs to represent our experiences. Well we didn’t actually have the brains, skills, musical talent or any know-how whatsoever to write any songs, so we simply changed words of songs that were being played randomly.
Hopefully some day I will have the balls to blog right here all of the text messages that I sent across the world that night.
  • Firstly, we are living in Reps
  • Secondly, the food has been horrendous
  • Thirdly, we are here building a big road
Ahem. [clear the throats]
Song 1
First we were in Reps, we were petrified.
Kept thinking food like this would leave us dead if it we tried*.
But then we cried so many nights
Shitting right here on the john
Our guts grew strong. We hurt but had to carry on
And now my crack, feels out of place…….
etc etc
Song 2
Fuck the road Jack, don’t make me come back no more no more no more no more.
* – poetic license
Titillating Tuesday – Persuasion
There’s a famous saying that we have all heard a million times through our lives, “You can take a horse to water but you cannot make it drink”. This idiom means you can offer something to someone, like good advice, but you cannot make them take it.
This saying is so true for so many aspects of life. It’s all about convincing others that what you say is the best for them and the situation. Taking ownership and leading by good example and hopefully commanding the respect that you deserve (if that is the case) and thus helping others help themselves for their benefit and that of the issue at hand.
In certain circumstances you just can’t seem to help some people. Perhaps it’s a misunderstanding? Perhaps it’s a personality clash? Perhaps you are just not asking in the way that is required for that person or circumstance. It’s all about persuasion and/or negotiation/compromise.
Sometimes it just simply takes the right person who knows how to get that horse to drink!
Tirana or bust
Spectacular!
Hit the town this weekend and did so with style! We had such an awesome time! My planned ménage à twelve didn’t quite go down as wished for but I managed to get close. I think it was a ménage à ten or eleven and sadly Pauline never showed up. But she sent her good family friend Pilsner and Pilsner’s close friends and sisters instead. Turns out they are a great deal of fun too!
As soon as we got into Tirana it started snowing. Not the sleety crap we have had in Reps over the past week but actual snow. Was so awesome to be walking around in it. I love snow. It didn’t take long for snowball fights to break out amongst the youngsters on the street. They were having great time but we determined they had ZERO coordination missing their buddies with the world largest snowball from 2 feet away. Damn it was funny!
We tried out a new bar in town on Saturday. The Tirana Rock Cafe. Very kewl. Kinda like the Irish bar only bigger, with better service and great music including a live band. The DJ could learn to mix his set a little better instead of switching from ACDC – Thunderstruck to Eric Clapton – Layla but at least the music was mainly English and mainly very good rock. Oh and it seems that the smoking ban has been lifted or just ignored which is so typical of this lawless place. One downside to the Rock Cafe. Copious amounts of cigarette smoke and no extraction. My eyes were burning along with my throat and now all my clothes stink! Bleugh!
Yesterday we went for lunch after praying to the beer gods begging forgiveness. They heard our prayers so we went on for round two instead this time we thought red wine was the play of the day. One or two glasses with the meal turned into an unexpected boozy Sunday afternoon. 4 or 5 bottles over lunch just got us warmed up. Back in the hotel for a another 3 or 4 large glasses and then off to a fancy restaurant for the good stuff. I have no idea how much was actually consumed but let me assure you, I was praying to the wine gods this morning begging forgiveness. Up at 5am to check out the hotel at 6am to get back to Reps. Thank God I never had to drive. Thank you Skittles for driving. I slept the whole way back!
Back at work and I’m battling to contain my sheer excitement.
The price we pay
I feel like death. Well I mean I can imagine that this is what death feels like just before you die. You actually wish to speed up the process just to put yourself out of your misery.
I’m never drinking again and this time I mean it.
Booze
Ok I’m lying. I’m going drinking tonight. It’s time to hit Tirana again. I’m going to visit Pauline and her sisters and hopefully she will bring some friends along. I’m not even talking about a ménage à trois. I’s talking about a frikkin ménage à twelve! At least. Click HERE to be reminded who Pauline is just in case!
Friday means what?
I hereby advise the universe of an addition to my plans which previously left open a 2 week gap for incidentals but which have subsequently been amended for the sole purpose of not confusing the crap out of the universe…. to be on the safe side as per warning received. See amendment below!
Today was a big day that I was looking forward to. It was going to symbol a major step in my departure from this place. It was the day that my replacement advertised position was going to close and enable us to make the decision of who was going to be the next IT Manager of this show.
My boss extended the opening for a week. Again, I shake my head.
All is not lost. There is still time. Time for a fight. It may only be a one week delay but that has some serious knock-on effects. It means my departure could be delayed by a month. It means my arrival at my next required destination will be delayed. It could also mean that the time that I was going to have between projects will be canceled. This however is all negative feedback. I’m not a negative person any more.
This is how its going to happen!:
If I have said it once, I have said it a million times!
                  • I will be out of Albania by 15 Jan 08 – End of contract
                  • I will be trotting the globe (UK & SA) for 2 weeks – 17 Jan 08 + extra with Special People in Arni SA! Veels geluk liewe maaitjie omdat ek verjaar… (Sp??) LOL – Soutpiel
                  • I will be in Houston by 01 Feb 08 – New contract prep
                  • I will be in Angola by 15 Mar 08 – New contract mobilize
                  • I will be in Angola until 20 Dec 09 – All systems running
                  • I will be in Port Elizabeth by 20 Feb 10 – Start CPL ground school
                  • I will be in Port Elizabeth until 01 Jul 11 – Get my Commercial Pilots Licence
                  • I will kick back for a couple of months to regroup and do aircraft type ratings
                  • I will get my hands on a Cessna 208B Grand Caravan and prepare to save the world
                  • I will then join or start an organization flying aid and/or medical assistance into Africa
                  • During hours of downtime I will then write a Pulitzer / Nobel Peace Prize winning autobiography including tales of misadventure, woes and rants and raves photographed by none other than yours truly.
                  • Punish a well deserved Klippies and coke and a packet of Lays
Cyanide and Happiness #14 – Laundry Day
Today actually is laundry day here in the wonderful camp of Reps (Shitsville). The schedule is really screwed up. My apartment block (sounds nice when you say it like that huh?) has the assigned days of Thursday and Saturday. So that means that on Thursday you have laundry from Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. On Saturday you only have laundry from Thursday and Friday. Kinda makes Saturday’s load a little worthless. DOESN’T IT? I need to get out more.
Dishabille
Dishabille: the state of being carelessly or partially dressed
I found this as an advertising link on my Gmail this morning. I was pleased to see it for two reasons. Firstly I think it’s a great idea to expand ones vocabulary and secondly I think the word perfectly describes this place and this camp that I’m living in.
It (the camp) almost looks like something with purpose, meaning and value but just not quite. There have been some improvements since I first started complaining bitterly about it but now I think we have close reached the peak of improvements. And there is still “something” missing. Character for one. Every other camp I have been to has had something special about it. A really kewl funky bar, awesome people, special trips away together as a team of mates, a special comradery or just good fun and games. I think this place should be called Camp Lunar – Fuck-all atmosphere!
