Raising Arizona Part II – Grand Canyon

We had planned to go and see the Grand Canyon so we woke up early, got prepped with camera and other goodies for the little day trip and called DubDub at the predetermined time, 9am. When we called him he said, “Wow you guys are really keen” which I didn’t understand and so he then went on to explain that Arizona didn’t observe daylight savings time. Doh it was only 8am! We could have slept another hour. AArrrgghhh!! You know how I love my sleep. Anyways, I was up now and that gave me a chance to write on my blog about previous adventures.

At the real 9am we were off to pick DubDub up. In the car and off to the Grand Canyon. Another long drive and we eventually got there. It really is quite odd. I figured with it being such a big thing that you would see it far away. Nope. Other than a few “small” holes in teh ground there really is no evidence of the upcoming gigantic super deep and incredibly long crack in the earth. You pay your way in and walk down to a lookout tower (we were at the east entrance) and not until you actually get right to the edge do you see it at all. I think that’s what adds to the anticipation and awe when you finally do look over. You really do lose your breath. There is no way of really explaining how magnificent it is. It is absolutely <Insert a really kewl word that describes the monumental size of it all>.

Raising Arizona Part I – Hoover

In typical Hoox style, we spent our Vegas departure morning running around town for gadgets. I had to see Apple to get my crappy MacBook sorted, had to visit a camera shop for a very specific camera lens I was after and had to go to an electronic store for a GPS. All that completed and we were on the road. Hoox in the driving seat and we were “Leaving Las Vegas”.

There really is nothing around Vegas for miles. Just really open, dry, flat desert. I couldn’t help but look over the dusty dry ground and wonder how many gangsters of old’s bones were still lying a few inches under the unforgiving earth.

After a few well documented street posts we hit our first destination. Hoover Dam.

Viva Las Vegas

Getting to Vegas was easy. All I had to do was show up at the airport. Eventually. LAX was pandemonium. About 3000 flights (perhaps an exaggeration) had landed at once and therefore were 100000s of people to get through immigration. It was awful. I stood in line for almost 2 hours. HEELLOOO B!!! I walked out the airport and jumped in my chariot. Thanks B. You are the best.

After a quick stop at a few shops and the all essential “Jack in the Box” hamburger, we were on the road and not too much longer after that I was fast asleep. When I woke up my eyes were dazzled by the burning bright lights of the Vegas skyline! If glitz and glamour is something you seek then look no further. Its just like in the movies. All sparkly and wonderful. It’s like a little fairytale city. All twinkly in the distance. The closer you get the stronger the smell of money! We were finally there. Our home for the next few days. HOOTERS Hotel and Casino! I was like kid in a candy store and my eyes didn’t know where to stop looking. With time differences etc I was absolutely knackered. An early night was had.

Fine Dining – Ratskeller

Ratskeller 00

During my little experience in Munich, I came across this wonderful restaurant called Ratskeller. Deciding to eat there was quite something. I was reading (flipping through) my Lonely Planet guide of Munich on the train from the airport when I happened to read about this place. It had a very catching write-up: “No animal is safe from the menu of this vast, cavernous restaurant, underneath the historic Rathaus. The quality is dependably high, service is efficient, and the surroundings couldn’t get much more atmospheric“. I was walking around Munich and really just happened upon the place. The decision was easy.

Munich

I was sitting in the departure lounge of Tirana International Airport. I had about 20 minutes left before boarding. I had killed as much time as necessary in this stinking airport and it’s now time to go. That’s when it dawned on me. I had NO PLANS. No idea where I was staying. No idea how to get around Munich. NO clue whatsoever. And I smiled. This is what traveling is all about!

The plane trip itself was very uneventful which for the most part is usually a damn good thing. I was hoping to get into the airport, rush to the counter and get my ticket changed and connected to a later flight that would get me to the US sooner. No such luck. The flight landed 30 minutes after the last available US flight had departed. This was it. Sleep in the terminal or go downtown Munich.

No brainer! Thank God for a British passport! Thank God for the EU.

Since I had never been to Munich before, the first thing I did was hit the info counter. Where can I stay? What should I do? How do I get there? Germans are SO friendly. I got all the info I needed with huge smiles and welcoming conversation. They really couldn’t do enough for me! I bought a Lonely Planet – Munich and Bavaria (the travelers bible) and hit the road, errm, train.

Feeling all German

This can honestly be the best cockup I have ever made in my life.

Last night was incredible. Never before have I mistakenly been to such an amazing and friendly city by sheer accident. I will write about it soon but for now I don’t have any time. I have to board in 20 minutes. I really cannot afford the shame of missing another flight. I am sitting in Terminal 2 at Munich Airport waiting for my plane. As wonderful as Munich is, I still have an entire trip ahead of me! RROOAADD TTRRIIIPP!!!

This is it. I am checked in, at the airport, in the departure lounge and best of all I am awake! I aint missing this one! The next 19 hours of my life will be spent at 32 000 feet! I love the thin air!

The only way it could have been better would have been if it was next weekend. I was one week early for Oktoberfest! But mind you, I think I might have had a struggle for accommodation. 8)

See you soon!

It’s time

The egg-timer is almost empty. Like sand through the hour-glass, these are the days…. Oh screw it. I’m outa here! No cheesy music “All my bags are packed, I’m ready to go”, no long winded story. Just me, my bags and a few beers in the sun.

This week has been mental. Successfully mental though! The shit that kicked off was necessary but hellava time consuming which is why I have been so quiet. Thanks to all the “LURVE!” shown in concerned emails. I am still alive and I have come out of this week kicking and screaming with a smile! “Times are (still) a changing”

One thing that pulled me through so well was the knowledge that come 6:15 Sunday morning, I was gonna be outa here! Well that time is now! Almost. It’s only Saturday afternoon but there is still beer to be drunk, Pauline to be caressed and cuddled and savoured and enjoyed. Friends to laugh with and sun to take in. This is the last chance I have to say …. “Whoooooo HOOOOOoooooooo, It’s RROOAADD TTRRIIPP TTIIMMEE!!!!!”

Hey ya’ll, I’ll try and update this here blog as we go along but it could be tough while in the middle of nowhere in some odd Bates Motel on the side of some unplanned stretch of highway in the back end of some random state along the way. When we hit WiFi, you get updated!

Me and my passport, together again. Epic journey ahead. We are so excited. Monday night we dine with Elvis. Viva La Vega!

Full update on my return in 3 weeks. Maybe 8)

XXXXXXX

Rugger

It really does seem that the RWC 2007 has kicked off to an awesome start…

Friday, 7 September:
France 12-17 Argentina (Interesting. I figured France would have done better)

Saturday, 8 September:
NZ 76-14 Italy (Is this the World Cup Cricket? – OUCH!)
Aus 91-3 Japan (Ok, Ok. THIS is the World Cup Cricket!)
England 28-10 USA (I’m glad to see USA managed a a few good points against England)

Sunday, 9 September:
Wales 42-17 Canada (A nice start for Wales)
SA 59-7 Samoa (COME ON BOKKE!!!)
Scotland 56-10 Portugal (Wow. Scotland can play rugby!)
Ireland 32-17 Namibia (Namibia plays rugby?)

I am so desperately jealous. I have no way of watching any live coverage of the world cup. Well at least not here in Albania. Hopefully I can catch some games when I’m in the USA.
