Cruisin’ down the freeway in the hot hot sun

28 09 2007

Today was a bit of a lethargic start to the day. I had dropped laundry off at a wishy washy spot across from the hotel yesterday and begged and pleaded for it to be ready for 9am this morning as we were wanting to set out early. Whatever! We have never set out early unless it was damn well necessary like going ballooning or we were just damn frustrated and annoyed and uncomfortable like in Yosemite. Today was no different. I set an alarm and I then I switched it off again. Pangs of guilt was the only thing that got me out of bed and to the laundry before 10am.

“Breakfast” consisted of 3 portions of mixed Dim Sums, a combination Chow Mein and green tea. Yes, we were in Chinatown and yes we had ordered too much. That has not been uncommon this trip thanks to B.

We saw some great statues and sights walking through Chinatown. It was pretty kewl. It is quite amazing that no matter where you are in the world, if you walk into Chinatown in ANY city you really could be in a different world. Language changes as do the people and surroundings. You have to keep reminding yourself where you are.

A short taxi ride got us back to the hotel and I picked up the car, we packed it up and we were on the road again heading south taking a few days getting to LA.

First stop was Santa Cruz. It was kewl to see the boardwalk that was the film location for many movies including one of my favourites, The Lost Boys. Although the story was set in a fabled town called Santa Carla, the famous rollercoaster is a dead give away. Other famous (and some not so famous) films have also been shot on the boardwalk.

We even had our Tarot cards read in Santa Cruz. She said that I had strength of 100 lions, was really good looking, witty, super wealthy, had superstar status, will be famous and was next in line to take over the world. This proves that either I am liar or she didn’t know what she was talking about. Ok all jokes aside, I’m not going to mock it but I most definitely have mixed opinions! Moving right on!

Second stop was Monterey, a wonderful old coastal village known for it’s fisheries and canning factories. Remnants of the old times are still in clear view as outside architecture has been saved and only interiors converted into shops, restaurants and hotels. We had an amazing lunch with an incredible sea view. The only downside was the weather. It had closed in early this morning and they say it won’t clear up until the weekend.

Last stop for the day was Big Sur. Apparently this is also a coastal town but apart from taking a few night photos along the way, I don’t know how close we are to the sea right now.

One thing I can say about this place is that the accommodation is the best we have stayed in so far on this trip. B has even forgiven me for picking such shitty accommodation in Yosemite. So now we have seen it all. Bad to good. I hope I haven’t just jinxed it. This is where I am right now and where I will rest my head tonight. Ok, no, not in the toilet! Look at the second pic! So nice!
