Somewhere between Barstow and somewhere else. A stop that I had to make and I am so very glad that we did.
Johannesburg. And Randsburg. Directly out of the history pages. It was amazing.
A little known fact:
There is a little town in California named Johannesburg and directly next to it 1 mile down the road is another little town called Randsburg. Coincidence? Actually no. Johannesburg, CA was named after Johannesburg, South Africa by some eager prospectors that had been in SA for the gold rush and had returned to California on hearing of the discovery of gold there. See some of the street names I have taken pictures of.
What I find the most amusing about the whole thing is that it due to it’s location it is known as, Johannesburg, CA - Gateway to Death Valley! Foresight?
I have taken heaps of pictures of both Johannesburg and Randsburg so please be warned for all those bandwidth cautious people, it could take a while to open. I have put a couple before the “(Click for more)” this time just in case. You see? How considerate am I?
Again, and it goes for all the pictures, if you want an original full size then please just let me know and I can mail it to you.

ahaaaaa…more than meets the eye is discovered on this trip….it is a well known fact that most yanks dont in fact know where Johannesburg is…let alone south africa so this(esp. for you bug) must have really pulled on the old heart strings. yanks that get finally you!!!
Did you get into any deep and meanignfuls with the towns folk of Rand(s)burg and ask them how they feel about the crime fluctuation in the area or did you just keep saying things like:
“where you from?”
“i am from Johannesburg” ….and they would go
“no seriously where are you from?” and you would be like
“seriously i am from johannesburg”…and they would go
“no mate this is a two horse town we whould have seen you round these parts…big striking chap like yourself!!”!…and you would just say
“listen i am from a successful mining town called johannesburg,i sware!!!!!”…and then keep it up as long as possible!
HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAhahaha ha!!!!!!!
ek ken`n paar mense wat baie lekka geld sal spandeer om dit te sien!!!
AWESOME PICS once again!!! i esp like the one for johannesburg emergency 911!! love it!!!
I was having trouble seeing If you were wearing trousers or skirt in the 911 picture…Now that’s what i call an emergency….Hoox wearing a skirt…nice legs by the way…Further down we got the 6 person/bed limit…that’s confusing…I thought they had no limit for anything out there Grandpa….
Ps (WG- thanks for helping me picture Hoox as grandpa) http://www.lassofusebox.org/assets/demos/simpsonfamily/Grandpa/images/grandpa.gif
KT - It went kinda like senario 2. But you guessed that anyways didn’t you? lol. The old lady that I was talking to was from Johannesburg. She was so sweet and so full of lovely interesting stories from those parts. She was almost in tears telling me about her better half that passed away 6 months ago but she was full of life when talking about the rest of the history and who owns what shop and who did what kind of mining. It was awesome! And I shit you not. Johannesburg was the ONLY sign I have seen so far that had the Emergency 911. Can you believe it?? Hahahaha Oh yeah, they couldn’t speak Afrikaans either.
Melaz - I was in California. Close enough to San Fran (gay capital of the world) so if I want to wear a skirt, I will wear a skirt ok!?? Any problems?
They actually happen to be the kewlest board shorts in the world. Quicksilver. “Lets go surfin now everybody surfin now come on safari with me” Beach Boys. You are allowed to agree now! Hehe. Grandpa?
