I beat the Turkish WordPress ban!
Who’s da man?

It seems this little thing called the internet isn’t so clever after all. It turns out there are ways to bypass blocks, bans and really stupid Turkish civil law human rights infringements. You change your DNS (Domain Name Services) on your computer.
For those that didn’t suddenly go “Ohhhh riiggghtt of course”, ie. the non-geeks, I will try to explain:

The internet works on millions of numbers called IP addresses. We can never remember every number we browse to unless of course you are the rain man but for the rest of us they have come up with a really good naming system. Can you imagine trying to remember, “My email address is offthehoox@64.233.161.83″. So they assign common names to these numbers. It’s so much easier to say, “My email address is offthehoox@gmail.com”.
Now, there are servers all over the world that resolve these names to numbers (IP Addresses) so that you don’t have to remember them. They are called DNS servers. My DNS servers happened to be in Turkey. So when WordPress.com was being resolved to 72.232.101.43 the ban kicked in and stopped all further traffic. So I changed the DNS servers that resolved the addresses. I pointed all my requests to DNS servers in the United States of America. Land of the free and home of the brave.
Hey presto. WordPress is live again!!!

I tolk my computer classes, but, alas, I didn’t much learn about how to change those damn things.
I did, however, learn how to fix a router in five minutes!

Lady - You are better than me if you can fix a router in 5 minutes. DNS entries can be manipulated in the proerties section of the TCP/IP of the current conection (WiFi or LAN)
