I tried my hand at Afrikaans this morning and I think it’s only fair to say that I sucked! It’s horrendous. I leave the country for 7 years and it’s all gone. All that Afrikaans that I learned in school in order to achieve a passing grade (35%) on Lower Grade just to get through matric (year 12) and it’s all gone! I have just enough Afrikaans left to impress someone who doesn’t even know where South Africa is. You know the country I am referring to!
The name Soutie I think was supposed to be some kind of insult derived by the Dutch settlers (Afrikaaners) as a way to describe the English settlers in South Africa. Now Soutie is actually an abbreviation of the name Soutpiel. Translated directly, sout = salt and piel(sl) = penis. This came from the idea that the English had 1 foot in South Africa and 1 foot in England and their penis hanging in the salt water of the Atlantic Ocean hence Salt Penis or Soutpiel. This was eventually shortened to the term Soutie.
I am a Soutie. But then again, if I think about it, all the places I have been with one foot securely planted in South Africa, my piel must have been dipped in a few oceans, blistered over a few deserts of North Africa, dragged up and down a few mountains and also left to chill in some snow. Imagine the imagery I just went though to work that out – lol. So maybe I’m not just a Soutpiel. My piel is worldly, streetwise, it’s happening man! Ok a little enthusiastic. My piel is just a well traveled piel and I’m proud to be called a Soutpiel!

i can’t stop giggling, that was really good…soutie!!!
Hahaha! HooX, you kill me!… a well travelled piel you say? *giggle*
Well, your Afrikaans is not bad, honestly – and I’m sure you’d pick up what you’ve forgotten in no time if you had people around who spoke to you in it.
Stef – Thanks but it’s true!!!!
lol
Lou – Thank you but now I know you are lying! So I can improve from my 2% back up to my scraping through 35% huh? Great! What is there to say about a well travelled piel? Many adventures high and low, getting to know the in’s and out’s, some hard times, some not so hard times, swollen egos, deflated feelings, at times been abreast of the situation and perhaps even once or twice gotten to the bottom of things… Ok now I know I have said too much
Stef – Lou is lying. It’s TRUE!!!
lol
As far as I’m concerned, when a Dutchy calls me a Soutie they’re actually saying my dick, I mean, piel is long enough to hang down into the water.
Hail the Soutie! Let us all unite!
Don – You are damn right man! Hail the Soutie! As much as I agree with unity, Im not sure all the Souties (piels) should be too close together in one place. “Know wa I meeeaaann?”
Hoox I feel perplexed (and laughed my ass off) reading this…Now are you crazyyyyy, got fever, or horrible food in Reps has such effect on your imagination…So I guess i’ll stop calling you Dr Hoox…Anyways kudos to YOU Soutie….
Melaz – Ahem! I am still the Doc! You can just call me Dr Soutie from now on! Might just have to take a trip to Italy to give the piel a dip in the Adriatic!
What ever happened to your toothpicks?
Adriatic sucks????Not salty enough. Try the Jonian sea…much better…
Toothpicks???I have been waiting for you to bring them remember…you never showed up…May be I wasn’t tanned enough…hahaha
Melaz – I was worried that the Adriatic was too dirty. I take good care of my piel!
Ok well I know you have been living in the sun recently so maybe I will bring some toothpicks this weekend. A deal is a deal!
