“Royal International Air Tattoo - Fairford” is quite arguably one of the worlds top air shows. That’s what I did yesterday. It was a very impromptu day out. The decision was made after a few beers on Friday night. My mate Mildew said he was going, I asked if I could join, he said yes, we went. What a spectacular day out!
Must listen: (some Top Gun mood music)7am hung over. Need to be at Mildew by 8am. I stagger out of bed. Throw myself through a shower. Get my camera and bag ready. Stumble out the door. Weather looking miserable. Get to the station. Train late. Doh. Wait. Get on train. Get to Mildew. In car. 2 hour drive. Bloody traffic. Feel sick. Get to the show. OH MY GOD! The weather suddenly cleared. There were already fighter jets in the air. Whooo hoooo!! It was absolutely incredible. It was a real life Top Gun. Dog fights, aerial combat manoeuvre displays, avgas, after-burners, speed, noise, adrenalin, action and by God, a whole lot of testosterone! After a couple of burgers which we called breakfast we headed for the grandstand. It was time to get “one” with the air force. Ladies and gentlemen, this is what it’s all about! KICK ASS!
Pictures speak a million words so I am going to shut up and then the pictures do the talking. I actually took over 700 photos but I guess I couldn’t put them all up. I hope these few will do, just to give an idea of the extent of the show.
