Crikey!!

Would you believe that the man who stuck his head inside croc jaws, wrestled with gators, poked fun at scorpions and pissed off the deadliest of snakes in the world, Steve Irwin, died this morning after being stabbed in the heart by a stingray barb?

The incredible TV and environmental entertainer, AKA The Crocodile Hunter, is believed to have swam too close over a stingray off the Great Barrier Reef while filming a new documentary called The Ocean’s Deadliest. I guess he proved it. The barb which can be up to 10 inches in length is the stingray’s defense mechanism which flexes when the ray is alarmed or feels threatened. Some say, “you live by the sword, you die by the sword”, but should not have been the case here. Although extremely painful, the attack is very rarely fatal.

It is a true shame. He put the life into wildlife. Children and adults alike were mesmorised by his incredible and very brave, some say stupid, antics. He created a show that had people wanting to learn and see more. He was definitely one of the greats. He will be sorely missed by everyone.

Medical Insurance

Definition: “Health insurance is a type of insurance whereby the insurer pays the medical costs of the insured if the insured becomes sick due to covered causes, or due to accidents”.

How on earth are you supposed to know what is covered and what is not? There is one sure fire way that I think everyone has discovered at some point and that’s actually require medical treatment and put in a claim. They are very quick to tell you what is NOT covered.

I went to an ENT (Ear Nose Throat) specialist some time ago and was diagnosed with “obstructive sleep apnoea due to obstruction both at the level of nose and palate; the effect of this over an extended period of time will be to lead to right sided heart strain and hypertension, and even heart failure”. Although very painful, this condition is easily rectified with surgery with a procedure called a “uvulopalatopharyoplasty”. Try and pronounce that!

So I submitted my claim for specialised medical review at the insurance company and surprise surprise – DENIED, “The uvulopalatopharyoplasty is not considered essential for the necessary care and treatment of an injury or sickness. This coverage decision was made based on the general limitation under your plan which states, “No payment will be made for expenses incurred for you or any one of your dependents for charges for supplies, care, treatment or surgery which are not considered essential for the necessary care and treatment of an injury or sickness, as determined by ***** ************.”"

My question to the insurance company is simple, “if right sided heart strain and hypertension, and even heart failure is not essential for the necessary care and treatment of an injury or sickness, what exactly do I have to be dying from in order to make this policy work for me?”

It’s in appeal now with a barrage of information that I submitted along with a lengthy covering appeal letter and further substantiating documentation. Even if I don’t get my way, I hope to at least bore them to tears!

HAPPY SPRING

To all those lucky people in the southern hemisphere:

spring.jpg

Happy Happy 1st September.

Put away the winter coats. Get out the shorts and tanning lotion. Great weather is on the way!

Geees September 1st? This year is already 3/4 over. What a hell of a year it has been. So much crazy and exciting stuff. It’s been a wild ride. Hectic. It’s been an amazing time of meeting new people and building new relationships. But this is not the time for nostalgia. It’s time to rejoice. Happy happy spring.

Ok so the real reason I’m so happy is because that might just mean its going to be cooling down a bit here. August is a harsh month here. Hot, DAMN hot!
