As Allah commanded, no man shall work on Fridays. No man except for us non-Muslim western contractors dedicated to the 70+ hour week! But we do however treat ourselves to a whole extra half hour lie in on Friday mornings that we can make up for by taking half a lunch hour! Make sense? Good! So Thursday night is our big “get down, kick back, knees up, paaarrrtttyyy” night! *As you do when you get to sleep in an extra half hour the next day*. To celebrate this traditional weekly momentous occasion we have an outside cook-up, BBQ, Braai (for the 2 of us South Africans in camp). We have tables laid out in the direct 48 degree sunshine and some even have umbrellas! You grab an ice cold beer, frosty glass, the little droplets of condensation running slowly down the side of the glass bumping into each other, growing, getting faster and bigger and faster and wetter until it runs all the way down and drips onto your hot sweaty skin baking in the sun. Ahhhh! Don’t get me started on the ice blocks! The chef fills the grill, which covers a bed of red hot coals, with a wide selection of dead animal which I personally hope is neither dog nor camel (of which the latter I am told is actually quite edible :-S), but am pretty sure once went MOO! We also have a selection of seafood from crab’s legs to lobster tail. Right? Seafood served in an environment close to 50C and no ocean in site. Ones hope for brilliant refrigeration. There is even a choice of veg that looks likes it’s been boiled for less than a week. That’s foul you say? CORRECT! There’s ALWAYS chicken!!! And never forget the Ice Cream and wide selection of amazing dessert in the desert! You know, when all is said and done, it’s the little things that we treasure. Good company, good cheer, great beer and wine and whiskey and vodka and gin and…… Its just gone 7pm and I’m off to the shindig! Bon Appetite you lucky bastards!
